It could be worse for Sylva Lark. She could be dead. A coma was nothing to that. Or her family moving across country for the treatment, leaving her with a big blue mark on her back.
She can handle it.
Mostly.
Except the mark glows and tingles, especially whenever transition helper Atticus Plot (Attic) is close by. She suspects he’s hiding something, and when she stumbles across a torn body bearing the same spiral marking as her own, that suspicion is confirmed.
After a few shaves with death, the truth finally comes out and the battles begin.
But not all her fights are external; her biggest one is the decision she has to make between doing the right thing for the world and giving up her beloved family for good. Veined (Guardian of the Angels, #1)

I didn’t like Sylva. She was very immature and made me think of a toddler stomping their foot to have everything their way. The romantic relationship was wasn’t believable. I found the whole book to be very discordant and had to make myself finish it. English
Check out my blog post for a great excerpt one this book and the 2nd book, also a great giveaway too. Just click the tour banner below.
I absolutely loved this book, such a great start to an amazing series I think. I was hooked from the first few pages. I love the concept of this story, its one I never read about before. Well, not like this anyway.
Sylva is a great lead female character, she was easy to relate too. Now Atticus Plot (Attic) is absolutely yummy, I really liked him a lot, and this complicated romance was very interesting and filled with twist and turns that you won’t see coming.
The idea of the Guardians of Angels is a bit unique I think. The demons are scary too, but not so much to make it read like a horror book. Which is good, as that’s not something I like to read too much.
There never was a dull moment at all with this book. It was paced just right, not too fast, not too slow. I never felt the need to put it down, the opposite really, had to tear myself away to do things, like cook dinner –late as I lost track of time, lol- and the family wondered what could keep me from doing what I am supposed to be doing.
I really do not want to give anything away as its part of the draw of this book; the not really knowing what is up.
I think the chemistry between Attic and Sylva Lark is great; he calls her little lark, so cute.
I did have a hard time imagining a guy, a hot guy like Attic, wearing long black gloves, kept thinking about the long thin gloves ladies wore with ball gowns, so that was hard to imagine without totally giving me a thought he was strange or something. I think that part that he needs to wear gloves would have had a more “cool” factor if they were normal leather gloves guys would wear, not ones that cover the whole forearm. Guys just would not be caught dead with those kinds, and I seen no reason for that style, won’t say why he needs them at all, but am pretty sure it’s just his hands that need covered.
I found the writing style really good. I am thinking the author must be European or something as she sometimes had a phrase or word that the very American characters would say that just would not be said by an American, the one example is when one of them got some bags out of the “boot” which is actually the trunk, and I only knew that because I have some Australian friends who also say that, and had told me what that meant. Many people may not know. There are just a few instances of that. But other than that, found no flaws with this book or the writing.
I was so very heartbroken at the end, I mean just was so sad about it. I was very glad I had book 2, Lethed, if I didn’t I would have been pretty upset that I could not continue right away.
I give this book 5 out of 5 stars. It really hooked me and tugged at my heartstrings.
I received this book from the author for my honest review.
I give the cover 3 out of 5 only because it does not fit the book at all. I had seen a different cover at a few retailers that has this same cover but shows the blue “Vein” on her back. That would at least fit somewhat. But what doesn’t fit, is that the model on the cover has blonde hair, when Sylva has long red hair, so doesn’t match the story. (Neither does the cover for book 2, dark hair with black around eyes, just seems strange, though had not finished that book as of writing this) That being said, the cover on its own, as in how it’s made and all that is fine, so nothing against the designer, just the fit of it for the book is all.
I highly recommend this series, give it a shot. A great Paranormal Romance, that is light on the romance.
English Auryn Hadley's list English absolutely love this book English 3 Tweeting Lark Stars
Hmmm... not really sure if I know how to review tgis. Even with the things that got on my nerves I still enjoyed reading this. Need more Attic English
Ok, so I'm going to try really hard to write a coherent review right now because HOLY WOW, that was amazing!! I am flabbergasted, in awe, riding on a action-packed high of awesome.
( *_* )
This book is about Sylva, a high school senior who unknowingly dies in a motorcycle accident, and comes out of a coma with powers imbued from the blood of angels. The price of her new lease on life? To take part in the ancient struggle between demons and angels, heaven and earth. Wrapped up in Greek mythology and elements of vampirism, the fantasy setting was endlessly intriguing, and I honestly had more questions than Sylva. The story reminds me how much richness there can be with the simple premise of good vs evil.
Sylva was a good heroine. She's just so young, but it could very well be that I'm getting older. She threw tantrums, held grudges, let appearance carry her away. But she is only 17 and there's a certain sympathy she inspires, because she's so very human. It makes her transformation that much more gut wrenching, because she didn't choose her fate.
Her humanity also casts the romance in a new light. Her attraction to the mysterious classmate Attic (who unsurprisingly turns out to be part angel, like herself) is equally awe, admiration, and lust. Attic, on the other hand, is older, stronger, and better in control of his abilities. The power imbalance is never really addressed; he crossed personal boundaries, stalks, and lies to her, all in the name of her best interests. Don't get me wrong, I loved Attic, but he treats Sylva more like a protege, or a child, and not like an equal partner. He never really gets his comeuppance for being a patronizing little shit for most of the book. It adds a certain creep factor to their relationship I'm not sure Sunday was aiming for. (I just kinda have a thing for arrogant assholes, see Toreth) I kept wishing Sylva did more to put him in his place.
I loved how Sylva had multiple romances. I loved her friends. I loved the ACTION, oh my god, my heart was racing! I loved the tragedy, the grief, and how freakin' angry Sylva got. This was a roller coaster. I can't wait to see what happens in Lethed.
It took a decent while for the ball to start rolling ... unfortunately Sylva was kept in the dark a decent part of the novel. But on the other hand, I had glimpses of the Sunday I know from m/m - rich family dynamics, great queer characters/subtext, hints of, ah, brotherly love ;)
In short, I'm hooked, I love this author, and I can't wait for more!! English Great Read. Can't wait to get the second book
This was a great story with a perfect introduction to the main character Sylva, and her transformation after her motorcycle accident. The family's move and new school all worked seamlessly into the story and plot development. Looking forward to reading book 2. English I absolutely loved this book, and I can't wait to read the other two in the Guardians of the Angels trilogy.
PROS:
- The pace of the plot is perfect. It doesn't gallop along, leaving you breathless; it also doesn't drag and leave you snoring! The slower parts help us feel what Sylva Lark is experiencing.
- The descriptions are well-written. Sometimes you have to slow down your speed to follow action scenes, but not in this book. I was able to follow all of the scenes and actions without rereading to clarify.
- The plot is unique and riveting.
- There's a bit of Greek mythology (a personal favorite) mixed into the angel mythology.
CONS:
- I don't like love triangles. At all. However, the triangle played a part in the plot outside of character development for Lark; the men play important parts in the story, and their interactions with Lark affect their choices. Also, she has a more realistic attitude toward the two men, realizing early on that her feelings for one aren't really there; she chooses to avoid telling him until after a school dance (to avoid ruining everyone's night), and that's the way a normal person would handle it.
Favorite scene: (no real spoiler, though)
- Lark is at home, preparing the table for dinner. The doorbell rings, and she goes to check on the door. When she opens it and sees a guy that's been pissing her off, she immediately slams the door in his face. Then she yells at him through the door until her mother makes her let him in. I LOVED IT! Her honest reaction was satisfying and entertaining, and it's one of many thanks to her spunk. English https://celebrityreaders.wordpress.co...
Okay, this series has been in my TBR list for YEARS! I originally read this book when it first came out. But when I looked for the rest in this series….*poof* I couldn’t find them anywhere. So I shelved it. But it always sat in the back of my mind, I would randomly check if the books were out only to met with disappointment when they weren’t available. When I finally purchased the third book, I was so scared that the series wouldn’t be as good as I remembered that I refused to read it for a full year.
Now, here I am on my second go-round for this series and I am SO glad it doesn’t suck! As a matter of fact, it does the opposite of suck. It…..blows? No, no, no, that isn’t right. ::shakes head::
It fricking ROCKS! Man, this author captured the emotions of a teenage girl on the cusp of adulthood so well. Sylvia is mature for the most part but backslildes a few times. She has trouble identifying her own feelings (we’ve all been there right?). She is also stubborn (I love when they have a stubborn streak) and she has this humility about her that is quite impressive for one so young.
And Attic…….
::Swoon:: This man is so patient and understanding when it comes to her learning. He allows her to fail without making her feel stupid or inadequate. He is sweet to her when she least deserves it, and he doesn’t go easy on her to ‘protect’ her but rather is harder on her because he cares so much. These traits are so attractive to me, you guys have no idea. He is a true partner in every sense of the word. ::sigh:: I loves him.
Go buy this book right now!!!!!! English EDIT: Wow. I've forgotten just how good this story is. Right up there with everything I love to write and read. I know the story may not be perfect, but it's my type of thing. So it's perfect to me.
Where to begin? Oh, yes:
The Plot: Is pretty basic for an YA paranormal, though with a twist. Sylva Lark wakes up cross-country and from a coma. Her family has moved there to allow better treatment. Little do the know that Sylva's doctors, as well as Sylva herself, are Guardians - bearers of Angel blood (in their Veins - hence the title) and demon hunters. Sylva must adapt to her new life, find out what's wrong with her and why she has the Vein mark and then decide whether she wants to be a Guardian or not seeing as she'd have to let go of her family and friends. Then, there's Attic, her supervisor and transition helper, soon to become trainer and love interest, and you just KNOW sparks will fly.
What I loved:
- the characters. All of them are awesome and I felt like I really got to know them. Sylva is a protagonist with personality I enjoyed following around. Not ONCE did she piss me off or make me want to scream at her to grow a brain. Even if there were times when she kinda avoided asking the right questions, she at least was aware of it.
- Attic - is not a jerk. He's a tease, which is a lot different. It's Sylva who kinda misjudges him and pushes him around emotionally. He doesn't have that annoying I'll-be-a-jerk-to-you-to-protect-you thing going on, for which I am forever grateful
- the whole process of Sylva making up her mind about becoming a Guardian or not - felt very real to me how her emotions bounced and it made sense.
- the world building - loved everything about it - including the familiar settings of forest and small town.
- the love story was just great. Nearly damn perfect! ;)
- That Sylva had powers too and used them, making her not so damsel-in-distress-ish. I hate damsels.
- it's a fun, fast story meant to be enjoyed rather than dissected. Though, if you read between the lines, you'll find some pretty awesome stuff.
What didn't bother me but could bother others:
- there are some extra words, punctuation marks and such, but who cares when it's such a fun story
- I'll be damned if I could think of anything else. I mean, I've read the lower-rated reviews and I don't agree with them - I'm a reader who remembers details, so I found no inconsistencies in the story.
BONUS: Favorite scene
I honestly recommend that everyone gave this a try if they like YA paranormal that strays a little from the classic formula. Will I read it again? Well, since this is already the second time, my guess is YES!
Will I buy the sequel? OF COURSE! I actually can't wait for it to come out! (hint, hint, Anyta!)
