The Purloined Curio: A Lizzie Borden, Girl Detective Mini-Mystery (Lizzie Borden, Girl Detective Mysteries Book 3) By Richard Behrens

Kind of flat. 47 I thought this installment was really cute. Lizzie is definitely gutsy! I enjoyed it very much. 47

Introducing Miss Lizzie Borden of Fall River, Massachusetts, a most excellent girl detective and the most remarkable young woman ever to take on the criminal underworld. Many years before her infamous arrest and trial for the murders of her father and stepmother, Lizzie Borden pursued a career as a private consulting detective as chronicled in this clever and imaginative series of short stories. When Elizabeth Wingate, a fraudulent spiritualist, comes to Fall River to exploit the grief of a bereaved widow, Lizzie Borden the Girl Detective joins forces with her cousin Sarah Borden and Homer Thesinger the Boy Inventor to protect the widow and expose a dark secret. Is the Cabinet of Curiosities haunted by the spirit of Awashuncks, Squaw Sachem of the Sakonnet? Find out in The Purloined Curio, the third mystery in the Lizzie Borden Girl Detective Mini-Mystery series. The Purloined Curio: A Lizzie Borden, Girl Detective Mini-Mystery (Lizzie Borden, Girl Detective Mysteries Book 3)

The Purloined Curio is not only the longest of the first five Lizzie Borden, Girl Detective Mini-Mysteries by Richard Behrens, it is also, thankfully, the most intricately detailed, entertaining, and in depth adventure in this delightful series.

What's so great about it? Well for starters, the author's writing is superb! He not only seems to know the real life Lizzie Borden, her family, extended relatives, and just about everybody else (real or fictional) that ever set foot in the Fall River, Massachusetts of the titular young heroine's Victorian era day, but he sure can put wickedly wonderful (and meticulously period accurate) words down on a page, by golly!

Most of all, The Purloined Curio is a first rate mini-mystery story. Plus, it's packed to the literary rafters with highly memorable characters, whose motives and psychological makeup make them seem both wonderfully distant and whimsical (like all the best denizens of 19th century literature), but also remarkable poignant, three dimensional (mostly) and exquisitely timeless and entertaining.

For me, this particular story rivals almost anything that Sir Arthur Conan Doyle produced in the Sherlock Holmes mystery series. And that's saying quite a lot right there, bub. Okay, The Purloined Curio is arguably no Hound of the Baskervilles, I most certainly do suppose, but the author really seems to know a thing or two about painting rich, vibrant scenarios, developing a suitably intriguing plot, and producing almost perfect pacing in his prosaic prose.

Behrens also seems to know how to flawlessly interweave the fictional and the truly historical with startling clarity, charm, and surprising wit. And who could ask for anything more? Believe me, if the Lizzie Borden Mini-Mysteries don't get you to rethink the life of a once young, intelligent, and resourceful Lizzie Borden - the one that lived, loved, laughed, and dreamed the usual young girl dreams, just like (well, almost) any other girl her age, before all that unfortunate 40 whacks business cropped up later on - I surely don't know what else ever would. 47 What an amusing read! As a short story (or mini mystery) this is quite a quick read. Superbly well written historical mystery with fleshed out characters & solid plotline, especially given the lack of pages opposed to a full length novel.
I enjoyed it immensely & have downloaded further books in the series! 47 This was the second of the series mini-mysteries that I read. I chose to read them in a different order, based on when they were written, and the story date that is in the first chapter. Two of the stories I have not been able to obtain on Kindle, so that affected the reading order as well.

I liked this one much better than Forlorn Maggie. I just found the story more interesting and it kept me reading and guessing how things were going to play out. 47 Well written and an enjoyable story. If only...we could go back in time and redo. Looking forward to reading more of this series. 47 Read books 1-5 in half a day

I love my kindle reading to me whilst I'm working on a project and these books were perfect for that. I gave the book and series 4 stars collectively. 47
