The book is a mix of useful general information (eg the importance of systems and delegation/out sourcing) and some very specific information about NY injury practice for that is not necessarily transferable. I am in no position to judge the latter. Quite a bit of repetition. Worth the read. The Power of a System: How to Build the Injury Law Practice of Your Dreams Awesome read for a young lawyer. This book is almost foundational thesis for every lawyer who aspires to set a profitable law office. It is a treatise of good business practice The Power of a System: How to Build the Injury Law Practice of Your Dreams
I want to thank John Fisher for sharing this book with the rest of the lawyering world! I intended to buy the hard copy but at the price of $1,217.48 on , I opted for the Kindle version instead. Frankly, after reading it, it’s obvious to me the ideas and recommendations alone would justify the $1,217.48!
I have been practicing law for 31 years and the ideas he shares and systems he recommends are an epiphany for me. I was in a partnership for 23 years and went solo a little over 3 years ago. I rarely deviated from what I was taught by mentors years ago as to how to approach the practice of law and, frankly, my former partner ran the day to day administrative operations. Implementing John's systems in my practice will enable me to better serve my clients and utilize my staff—and may actually help me get back a life away from the office. I’m excited to give them a try!! The Power of a System: How to Build the Injury Law Practice of Your Dreams I'm going to go into this in depth because I enjoyed 97% of the book. A bit of background, I've been a practicing lawyer for 15 years and (knock on wood) pretty successful. What I struggled with was two things running the firm and streamlining marketing. This book deals with those two things.
Pro's:
Well written, you can tell it wasn't just repurposed blogs or some crap that he put together one weekend. He explains why he suggests things and spends some solid time organizing and writing.
Concrete examples of what works! This is huge, really huge. I've read the E myth attorney which is a top down, view from 10,000 feet but no hard specifics, same with some of the other books and consultants I've worked with. What I want is a form, an example of what YOU do, what works for you. Don't tell me automate and end it that. How the hell do I automate!?! John shows you exactly how on many key points (not everyone) but he goes into a lot of hard, specific details.
Responsive, I've emailed his office and got a response that was very much appreciated.
He's a real lawyer. Not a guy with a JD who couldn't hack it as real lawyer and now consults. Go to his website and you see he takes cases, settles and tries cases. I am always weary of guys who are consultants but don't have a law office.
Cons: As with anything there are a couple things that you shake your head at.
His age is showing. Let me explain, I'm only 8 years younger than John but when he says you need to have clients fax in a request for a telephone call, I think What's a fax? It's a bit older thinking since the vast majority of my cases are clients in their 30's and have no idea where to even find a fax machine. Same thing with his aversion to email, which is really a nice take on Tim Ferris' 40 Hour Work Week, and that's not a dig, it's a great integration of the two systems, but you can tell the author is a bit older and has distrust of email, cellphones, etc. I should say the same with his Case MGMT softwareit's old. I mean old, it may work perfectly for him, but if you are starting out and look at it the software is not even close to up to date in terms of interface, cost or Cloud computing.
First 1/4 of the book is really his employment handbook. This actually is great! As you can read it and cut and paste the appropriate parts for your own office handbook. But it takes a few pages to realize that John isn't talking to you..but to his legal assistants.
It's PI focused. Yes I know it's in the title!!! So what did I expect? I'm not a PI lawyer but about 80% of this book works perfectly for NON PI lawyers, so I guess this could be a pro or con, but if you are looking at just doing car accidents, he goes beyond that.
Overall, this is a must read, truly a MUST FREAKING Read for any solo or small law firm. It's cheap (which let me say, the hardcover is $800+ bucks but don't buy that one! (I suspect he is set up for the printing and that's just what it costs) the kindle version is $20, less than a cost of lunch. It's no brainer. The Power of a System: How to Build the Injury Law Practice of Your Dreams John Fisher has figured out how to run a modern law firm, which means that his overhead is low, but his capacity for high quality work is extremely high. John leverages technology, but — importantly— he has a solid system. And he has meticulously documented his system, and graciously made it available to any other lawyer that might want to use it.
This book is a gem. It's chock full of actionable, practical information. If you are a personal injury lawyer, and you want to optimize your workflows and guide your staff then you need to buy this book and immediately start reading it. If you're not a personal injury lawyer, but you have the ability to analogize (remember that's one thing they actually teach in law school), then you can also make use of this book.
The power of a good system for running a law practice cannot be overestimated. This book will give you all of the specific information you need to implement a powerful system for running your law practice. Once you have a solid system your law practice will mostly run itself, freeing you to do the things that only someone with a bar roll number can do. The Power of a System: How to Build the Injury Law Practice of Your Dreams I’ve been practicing law for 30 years. It took me the first 10 of those years to “figure things out” and start having control over my practice and life. I believe that if I had John’s book back when I started, the exciting and often unpredictable ten year learning curve I experienced would have been reduced down to one or two months. If you’re going to build the practice of your dreams, then get John’s book, accelerate the success process, and save yourself years of time! Mitch Jackson | 2013 California Litigation Lawyer of the Year The Power of a System: How to Build the Injury Law Practice of Your Dreams I've read most every book on marketing, growing, and managing a law practice, whether the book is available on or only on authors' websites. This is one of the best.
And despite its title, it is not just for injury lawyers. Too many lawyers believe that they should only emulate the successful techniques of lawyers in their specialty. That is a big mistake.
The basic marketing premise offer free information that demonstrates expertise, and then follow up with educational information works for all professions and businesses. Nonetheless, most lawyers still advertise free consultations, aggressive representation, etc., etc. They would do far better to use the lead magnet funnel approach recommended by Mr. Fisher.
Buy the book, and decide for yourself. Following its suggestions will make you a better marketer and manager. The Power of a System: How to Build the Injury Law Practice of Your Dreams
