Included in Hugo 2015 Voting Packet The Journeyman: In the Stone House
Part of a small quest this year to read all of the Hugo-nominated novelettes, in spite of the controversy.
First thought: Oh, another post-apocalyptic story where humans have descended to stone age tech. Second thought: Oh, it's on another planet. Well, still basically the same, but with the hope of someday getting back to the stars where there are still other humans. Third thought: Oh, now we've got the foreign legion and a training montage. So this whole thing really was just a way for one of the main characters to steal a sword and settle a score. Final thoughts: the ending felt rather telegraphed and the story as a whole felt like it had been cut down from something much longer, an excerpt from a novel trimmed too far. It's the second in a series of three (so far) stories, and stands on its own, more or less, but I feel like the more interesting story would have been the one in which the protagonist met his sidekick. English Did not finish, despite the fact that it was like 30 pages long.
By half way through page two the world perforce was used and a character was named Sammi o' th' Eagles.
Not my cup of tea. English Nope. The protagonist keeps calling the princess babe. English This was a Hugo novelette nomination in 2015. I believe it was one of the ones that was aided onto the ballot by the Sad Puppies. If it wasn't for my quest to try to read all the short fiction nominees for various SFF awards, then I would have avoided it entirely. It's a post-apocalyptic science fiction story that comes over as a sword-centric fantasy, complete with bad characterizations, dialog and names. English Could not get past the second page. Daft language, eye rolling ideas. Just no. English
3-3.5 stars.
Almost a western adventure story, but with a brief SF twist. English
