The star player for the Sunnyvale Hawks Hockey Team just kissed me in front of an entire party. Now, he's telling everyone he's my boyfriend.
Sounds great, right?
Problem is, I've never met this man before in my life.
Things just went from awkward to complicated.

After transferring to Sunnyvale University, I was ready for a fresh new start and a new identity. However, what I didn't expect was to see the person who destroyed my life and forced me to transfer schools mid-semester, to be attending Sunnyvale, too. She knows my secrets and has the power to destroy everything I've created for myself. Feeling hopeless, I worry my dream of starting over won't happen.

Everything changes when Phoenix Westgate, the Sunnyvale Hawks star player and notorious playboy kisses me at a party and calls me his girlfriend. Guys like Phoenix don't typically date girls like me. I'm not into parties and I hate being in the spotlight. But with one kiss that went viral on social media, I'm not thrust into his world whether I like it or not.

Now, suddenly people are noticing me my ex-best friend is leaving me alone. This would all be perfect if Phoenix didn't have his own motives. Needing to improve his image with his team and the media, he devises a plan for me to be his fake girlfriend.
As we begin our charade, walls crumble as emotions get mixed into our game. I'm losing sight of what is real and what's fake anymore.
Will Phoenix and I get what we want without losing our hearts in the process? Or, will we just have to fake it?

The Fake Out is a spin-off series from the Puck Sunnyvale Hawks Series.

I love a good sports romance, add a fake relationship to that and I am all for it! I was looking forward to reading this but in all honesty, this fell short for me.
The outline of the story was promising but sadly, it didn't hit the mark.
I loved that both Phoenix and Ellie had troubled pasts and were both working to overcome their demons/ secrets. Phoenix comes to Ellie's rescue at a party by kissing her and announcing she is his girlfriend. He suggests they continue the ruse to help them both out.
It didn't grab me like other hockey romances I've read but I did still enjoy it.

Unfortunately, this book felt like a first draft. The grammar errors were more than plentiful. The narrative switched between past and present tense within the same paragraph, sometimes within the same sentence.
Timelines were skewed, and details were either completely forgotten about, changed, or repeated as though the characters didn’t already have that exact same conversation.

The premise was good. The characters could have been lovable if written better.
The writing style was juvenile and incomplete. It felt like I was reading a story on wattpad.
I wish I could have loved this, but it was not well written and I struggled through the short book. It was a fight to keep going and finish.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review. The Fake Out: Sunnyvale Hawks Hockey Romance Series I love books that are all about the fluff and the romance. I also love fake dating and hockey romances. So I was really excited to read The Fake Out when it showed up on my recommendations. Sadly, it's not everything I was hoping for, so lets get into it.

First off, this reads like a first draft. The number of punctuation errors is egregious and the author mixes up the characters names several times in the first chapter. I wouldn't be surprised to find out that the author never actually proofread chapters after writing them.

The timeline is an utter disaster. It's the middle of the second semester of her sophomore year when it starts, then a week later it's August, and about a year later it's the middle of winter. By all accounts she's been in California for about 2.5-3 years (transferring from UCLA to SU then staying there for almost another year) but then the character says she's only been in California for a year.

On top of all that the dialogue is stiff and unnatural, the writing is repetitive, and the characters are two dimensional. They flip back and forth between old me and new me with no in between or sense of growth.

All in all, this book did have potential. I could see the thought that went into it and everything it could have been. But it seems to me that the rush to get it done and out mattered more than putting out a quality book.

There’s just something about a sweaty hunk running around in tight pants. Of course, in hockey, the hunks are all covered up but you know what’s underneath all that gear.
Hockey hunks are the focus of The Fake Out by M.A. Lee. It’s the first book in the Sunnyvale Hawks series.
At a party one night, the hunky star of the hockey team, Phoenix Westgate, “rescues” Elle from her evil, bullying ex-BFF. He claims he’s her boyfriend and kisses her in front of everyone. The kiss is caught on camera and goes viral. Suddenly, spotlight-shy Elle is the center of attention and Phoenix suggests they keep their fake relationship going. A fun, sweet romance with great characters and a very satisfying, happy ending.

Note: The version I read was an advanced copy that hadn’t been through the final editing yet. There were several errors like mixed up names, time lapses or contradictory locations. Hopefully, your copy won’t have that issue.
