The Experts Guide to Weight-Loss Surgery: Is it right for me? What happens during surgery? How do I keep the weight off?
This is a MUST READ for anyone who has had, plans on having, or is researching weight loss surgery. It talks you through each surgery (benefits and drawbacks), what to expect at each stage of the process (dealing with insurance, pre surgery, hospital stay, and stages post surgery including diet progression, fitness, the mental game, maintenance, and issues you may face late in your journey). I got this book as I was researching what surgery to have and what I could expect as a WLS patient, and I still use it as a reference months out for diet and exercise suggestions. Garth Davis An excellent read that explains the journey of WLS in easy to understand language. Definitely a book to go back to time and again. Garth Davis this book is written by a doctor and has all the pros and cons of gastric bypass that you need to know and why.i was very impressed with it with clear understanding of what happens every step you go and why you must not do and what will happen.this one of the best books I have read on the subject so far.... Garth Davis Taking consideration of the fact that a bariatric surgeon, and a tv show one at that, wrote this book - this was an excellent read. I was on the fence about the whole thing, just sitting on the fence. I had several hangups about getting a cosmetic surgery instead of buckling down and working hard to lose the weight myself. Even though that hasn't worked. Ever. This book goes through every reason you can't get the weight off, every risk of surgery, every option besides surgery, every benefit of surgery, every up and down that comes post-surgery, and every pitfall that you will face. The key take away from this book is that surgery is not the beginning, and it is not the end; weight loss surgery is a tool to use to get to your goal. This book is very blunt and very clear. I appreciate the factual information given, and yet there are many personal touches that keep the book from being overly dry and too technical. I like the breakdown and organization of the book as well. I can honestly say this book addressed my fears, my hangups, and my hopes equally. I cannot wait to talk to the professionals and get more information about my specific program I will have to follow. Garth Davis The Expert's Guide to Weight-Loss Surgery is exactly what it claims to be in the title. Published in 2009, some of the information is dated and incorrect in 2022 but most of the book is still helpful and informative for pre- and postoperative weight loss surgery candidates. I borrowed this book from my library several months before my surgery and bought my own copy after surgery for further help. Garth Davis includes chapters on navigating insurance, preparing for stark changes in your eating habits, how to qualify for the surgery at your surgeons office, how to adjust to your new life post surgery, and many more topics every candidate needs to know.
The Expert's Guide is a must read (and a quick read) for gastric bypass, gastric sleeve, and duodenal switch patients.
