'How religious are you?
I never know how to answer that question. I mean how do you measure religiousness?'

London worships many gods, but it often seems that Cupid isn't one of them. Sabrina, a single girl-about-town, is seeking Mr Right in a world where traditional and liberal brothers sit side-by-side, but rarely see eye-to-eye.

Shades explores tolerance within and without the Muslim community.

A programme text edition published to coincide with the world premiere at the Royal Court Theatre, London, on 28 January 2009. Shades (Modern Plays)

Loved this play! Shades (Modern Plays) In Alia Bano’s Shades the characters Sabrina, Zain, Reza and Ali – all young British Muslims living in modern day London – struggle with the prejudices they face, because of their cultural backgrounds. Although one would expect these prejudices to come from the outside, they are indeed confronted with them among their own community. Sabrina must face all these preconceptions while looking for the perfect match, thereby pleading for common sense within her community. First-time author Alia Bano skillfully plays with themes such as tradition, religion, sexuality and cultural identity. No wonder this powerful won Bano the award for Most Promising Playwright in 2009. (Julia Mader & Claudia Lindner) Shades (Modern Plays)
