Mentaiko:

Suddenly, Mr. Tanaka’s smile faltered and his gaze was diverted. Ryuichi followed the man’s eyes to the figure of Sho-en. The boy was evidently unimpressed by Mr. Tanaka’s rhetoric. Instead, he appeared to be studying his textbook intently. His head was bent over his desk.

Mr. Tanaka stepped light and lively to stand before the boy, casting a shadow over his small and shapely head. The whole class had turned to look. Still, Sho-en did not notice, he was too engrossed in his book and whatever learning was to be found within it.

Anger stirred in Mr. Tanaka’s face and Ryuichi smiled maliciously in anticipation of what was to come. The teacher brought down the paper baton in his fist down on Sho-en’s head and Sho-en yelped in surprise as he was struck. He looked up at Mr. Tanaka and his eyes expressed his animal fear. The other pupil’s faces registered various degrees of shock and satisfaction at what transpired – Sho-en was generally well liked but the more patriotic among them felt he got what was coming to him.
“Lee Sho-en!” Mr. Tanaka roared. “I thought I made clear that this is not time for study! What is the meaning of your insubordination!”

Sho-en’s face turned as red as Mr. Tanaka’s and he struggled to reply, “Sir, I…”

“Stand up and speak up!” Mr. Tanaka ordered, shouting into the boy’s face. “What do you think you are doing!”

Sho-en jumped up from his seat. He stood taller than his teacher. This seemed to increase Mr. Tanaka’s annoyance and he struck both sides of the boy’s head again with the newspaper, shouting: “Bow your head!” to which Sho-en quickly complied letting his body droop slightly until his bowed head was level with Mr. Tanaka’s eyes.

Sho-en had broken out in a cold sweat and bewildered tears sparkled at the corner of his eyes. Meanwhile, from his corner, Ryuichi laughed softly and nearly clapped his hands happily watching the scene.

“Well! What is your answer!” Mr. Tanaka demanded, his voice like thunder.

“I am sorry, sir. I have no excuse.” was all Sho-en could manage and his voice broke as he said the words.

Mr. Tanaka seemed mollified by this contrition but his anger was still apparent. “And you a prefect in this class! The leader of the school exhibition!” he snarled, sneering at the irony of it. “You are a disgrace! I will be informing the headmaster of your attitude and your scores will be docked for this disobedience!”
