Jangloos Vol. 3 / جانگلوس: جلد سوم By Shaukat Siddiqui

Combined review for voulme 1, 2, and 3
The story is about two people who escaped prison - Laali and Raheem Daad. After the initial few chapters, it becomes Laali's adventures.

I haven't finished the book yet. But I am ready to review.

I have read plenty of similar stories. I wouldn't name the authors here. I am not saying that others copied his style or whatever, but I wasn't amazed as I had hoped.

If the book surprized me towards the end, I will revisit the review and change the rating.

For now, 3/5. Shaukat Siddiqui … At last I have finished all three volumes of this magnum opus that is being termed as THE GREAT PAKISTANI NOVEL by the Urdu critique Mr. Rauf Parekh. I have a mixed feeling for this novel; the theme is socio-political which quiet un common in Urdu literature but the length is too stretched up; My believe is that instead of three volumes of 700 plus pages it could have been condensed into one 800 plus page book.
The plot reflects the socio-cultural-political state of affairs in rural Punjab (mostly south/central districts) the tyranny faced by the peasants from the land lords, the exploitation of rule and regulations, corrupt bureaucracy and the gutter culture that exist behind the close doors of big mansions every thing is there, the plight of common man is vividly portrayed by the author

It is quiet obvious that the Mr.Siddique was of left leaning and had strong opinion regarding the feudal structure of our society how ever in fiction it is necessary to invoke interest among the readers which could be achieved thru pacey narration and was a hallmark of KHUDA KI BASTI by the same author some how that is found missing here.

the characterization is deep and realistic ,cultural ethos are correctly showcased but the repetition of certain events, situations and dialogues marred the story telling, some words are repeated quiet often like ZEHAR KHUNDA which if used selectively would have beautify the narrative but over usage caused an irritation, some issues are narrated through a character in a sermon or a documentary style which reduced the literary impact of this classic.

I have given it three stars due to its unconventional theme, political discourse, characterization but the length has proved to be the spoiler. Shaukat Siddiqui یہ ناول پانچ ستارے کا حقدار ہے۔۔۔! رحیم داد کاش حقیقت ہوتا۔ Shaukat Siddiqui Absolutely brilliant. The author was from Lakhnow, a typical Urdu speaking society . His command over social interactions, language, culture, politics, geography, topography, history, knowledge of Panjab's various races and castes, problem of Panjab's rural, agricultural, and aristocrat society is superb. Both the lead characters are opposite to each other. One is illegitimate child, the other is a farmer; one goes to jail for a crime, the other for a feud over land; one is man of principles the other has no principles but mere greed opposite to their criminal and rather noble backgrounds. Description of their problems and their conflicting psychology is delicate and complicated simultaneously.

Over all the novel is a complete history of Pakistan's social, cultural, political, moral and economical corruption. I am surprised why this novel is not banned in Pakistan.

Shaukat Siddiqui
