When we survived the uninsured loss of 2007, which took me to the absolute knife edge of bankruptcy, we continued to face further challenges, and the future of my company was uncertain for many years, though we didn't share this fact widely.

When I told people about what had actually happened to us, they seemed genuinely amazed that we actually survived. Many suggested that I write it all down but like everyone else, I ALWAYS had other things to do...

I started making notes in 2011 to write a book, but it wasn't until the lock-down of 2020 that I actually started writing it. 8 days into the lock down on 2 April 2020, I started writing and actually published on 25 May.

This was definitely a family project, as my wife dutifully listened to my chapters, which I wrote at a rate of knots - sometimes 2 and even 3 per day; my son, Josh designed the incredible cover and drew all of the illustrations. I even recorded an audiobook in this time too! I am immensely proud of what we have achieved both as a family, as a business and as individuals too.

The book evolved over time as well, as my original plan was to include a great quote and fun bits, some philosophy and some business know-how too and finish with a great recipe at the end of each chapter. However, this is a whole lot simpler now and I plan to my favourite recipes on this website instead, and I think that the book is better as a result, too.

My aims from the book are primarily to share some happiness, which is altogether rare during this lock-down period; raise a bit of money for MAG, who are a mine-clearing charity which I support; but above all else, to try to inspire some people that they can actually do more in their lives.

This is NOT a self-help book and I am no guru, but I do think that self-belief and gritty determination can go a very long way to achieving our goals.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Noughties were a fascinating period within broadcasting and Barry writes first hand presenting how a company grew rapidly during a halcyon period within the industry, presents real life management issues with family and business planning, resolution and how success was brought back after difficult economic times. I'd recommend with this book without hesitation as a management read, fascinating story of how to turn things around and maybe a story familiar to many?

5.0 out of 5 stars A great read about business, burglaries, bicycles, life and the quest for the perfect Cappucino!
Barry is the owner of a rental company hiring equipment to television production companies. In this book he takes us on a journey exploring the history of the company his father started. Along the way, he has to deal with a sequence of major events that all threaten the very survival of his business. With his never give up attitude he explains how beyond all odds he managed to turn his company around and repair the strained relationship with his father. Whilst not just a remarkable story of entrepreneurship, Barry somehow manages to weave into the pages tales of his travels, how to make the perfect Cappucino and provides us with many inspirational thoughts throughout this gem of a book.

5.0 out of 5 stars If you have got a small business this contains many useful lessons. This is a great Little Book. I read it in more or less one sitting. Working in a similar business sector the lessons within are interesting and it's nice to see that a dose of optimism and a lot of hard work and execution win the day.

5.0 out of 5 stars I have always found the company which Barry writes about in the book a pleasure to deal with and had often wondered why this was the case and this book tells me why.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thoughtful, Insightful and delievered with some wonderful humor. This is a great read and shows the highs and lows in running and managing a business. If you want some inspiration from a very charismatic person like Barry, this is a must read.

5.0 out of 5 stars A lockdown gem! Well what a read – you’re kind of waiting for the disaster, but it’s actually an ode to positivity, tenacity and a drive to succeed against massive odds, but not in a selfish way. Some will see this as a business managerial book, but it’s a celebration of trying to do good! It’s one man’s journey so far yes he’s businessman journey so autobiographical, and then again philosophical. A lesson in making decent coffee and the resolve and persistency you need to make someone smile. It’s a lockdown gem and its definitely not curtain for this guy it’s just ploughing on feeding grass to some cows and a lesson in keeping going when others would have folded.

5.0 out of 5 stars Infectious. A perfect antidote to our troubled times. It's full of positivity and energy, and is written with pace and lightness. It feels like it's been created effortlessly, a rare skill which makes for a delightful read.
