The Story of Anne Frank: A Biography Book for New Readers (The Story Of: A Biography Series for New Readers) By Emma Carlson Berne

This is a well written biography from a series of similar biographies geared toward younger readers (6 9). This one is about an inspirational person named Anne Frank during a very dark time in our collective history. The Holocaust may be too mature of a topic for the ages that this book is intended but, the way it is written makes it consumable for younger audiences. Colorfully illustrated and in a direct and simplified writing style, the book covers serious and heavy topics such as antisemitism, Nazis, concentration camps, Hitler, struggling, fear, suffering, death in a straightforward manner. I don't think children need to be sheltered from the topics. The younger they are, the limited their understanding will be. But I would still recommend it for ages 8 10. And think that ultimately it's really up to parents to decide and also help to answer inevitable questions along the way. I really liked how the book focuses on Ann and goes through her early childhood, what it was like, her family, etc. Then it goes through the time when she, her family, and others were in hiding. Then what happened after they were discovered all the way to her death. The book highlighted her hope, imagination, and determination of young Anne and how she coped. The book is wonderful with lots of colorful illustrations. It gives a nice timeline of the events and Anne's life. There is a series of questions in the end for comprehension and discussion of what was learned from the reading. And a helpful glossary of all the terms that were used in the book. I got this for my 8 year old. I read it first ahead of time. And we will be reading it together so I can answer questions along the way.
