Although written before the turn of the Millennium this book predicted many of the social political and technological changes that have come to pass in the first two decades of the twenty first centurySome other reviewers here have seen fit to condemn this book for what they perceive to be its authors' unpalatable extreme far right libertarian ideology or selfish misanthropic attitude From my reading of the book these accusations are unfair The authors do have a detectable libertarian bent but this does not detract from the rigour of their historical analysis or the clarity of the reasoning by which they arrive at their conclusions and predictions Throughout the book their concern is reality and what shape it will take in the future that is now our presentBy any objective measurement the authors were immensely successful in their efforts identifying and anticipating the many of the fundamental technological and social forces that have shaped the last twenty years of world history Among their predictions written let us remember in 1997 arePolitical A decline in the status and power of traditional elites as well as a decline in the respect accorded the symbols and beliefs that justify the nation state An intense even violent nationalistic reaction centered among those who lose status income and power when what they consider to be ordinary life is disrupted by political devolution and new market arrangements suspicion of and opposition to globalization free trade foreign ownership and penetration of local economies popular hatred of the information elite rich people the well educated and complaints about capital flight and disappearing jobsEconomic Lifetime employment will disappear as jobs increasingly become tasks or piece work rather than positions within an organization Many members of learned professions will be replaced by interactive information retrieval systems The new society and therefore the new culture will be defined at one end by what machines can do better than people by automation that will do away with increasing numbers of low skill tasks and at the other by the power that information technology gives to people who actually have the talent to take advantage of it When the state finds itself unable to meet its committed expenditures by raising tax revenues it will resort to other desperate measures Among them is printing moneyTechnological the advent of the Information Age implies another revolution in the character of money As cybercommerce begins it will lead inevitably to the cybermoneyThis new digital form of money is destined to play a pivotal role in cybercommerce It will consist of encrypted seuences of multihundred digit prime numbers Uniue anonymous and verifiable this money will accommodate the largest transactions It will also be divisible into the tiniest fraction of value It will be tradable at a keystroke in a multitrillion dollar wholesale market without bordersMedia Within the next few decades for example narrow casting will replace broadcasting as the method by which individuals obtain their news This has significant implications It amounts to a change in the imaginations of millions from first person plural to singular As individuals themselves begin to serve as their own news editors selecting what topics and news stories are of interest it is far less likely that they well choose to indoctrinate themselves in the urgencies of sacrifice to the nation state Indeed their attitudes are likely to be informed by the global culture to which they relate as consumers of entertainment that by the highly personal news narrow casts to which they may subscribeThe authors did not come to these startling insights at random They are derived from a detailed investigation into megapolitical historical trends the most fundamental and important factors that have shaped the successive forms of human society and civilisation so farAnyone who seeks a deeper understanding of the technological social and political upheavals of the last two decades would be well advised to read this book To uote from its introduction As technology revolutionizes the tools we use it also antiuates our laws reshapes our morals and alters our perceptions This book explains how Tut uns Leid! Robert Kiyosaki author of Rich Dad Poor Dad recommends The Sovereign Individual as one of the must read books for those who want to be Financially Independent I like this book for its contribution to future trend watching It ranks as one of the essential readings for those who want to be Financially IndependentJames Dale Davidson and Lord William Rees Mogg are experts at predicting future trends and tailoring financial strategies and self reliant measures to protect oneself against the future The Sovereign Individual is about self accountability and taking action The Sovereign Individual is not beholden to his government and looks out for himselfherself and hisher loved ones The Sovereign Individual takes steps to ensure hisher physical safety jobbusiness and financesThis book challenges the concept of nationhood and all the propaganda fed to us The concept of nationhood as we have come to known is a relatively young one and not necessarily a good one Governments spouting patriotism can make use of its people for its own ends eg burdensome taxes raising armies for wars treating its citizens like low classed employees all for the benefit of a select elite fewA warning for the interested would be reader The Sovereign Individual is written in the typical DavidsonRees Mogg famed style alarmist paranoid and hyberbolic I urge the reader to see pass this style because there is much to be gained from reading this bookFor the interested reader I would also recommend The Roaring 2000s by Harry Dent Tut uns Leid! An extreme far right libertarian dystopian view of the future that his son JRM appears to be willing along with his WTO no deal Brexit plans Yesthe information age is upon us and the impact of goverments being unprepared has led to western liberal democracy being challenged This has resulted in a rise of nationalism across the globe If you voted Brexit because you believe Britain can be a great sovereign state outside the EUthen read this book and you will find that WRM is predicting with relish at the thought of monetary gains from no taxation the demise of the nation state including goverment services like the welfare state and nhs Of course we are just tax slaves and how much better off we will be when we are liberated from taxation and no longer have to pay for the services provided to the less well off in societyexcept youyes you who voted brexitwill be one of the less well off rather than a sovereign individual Tut uns Leid! Truth to tell I was a wee bit disappointed when it became obvious that I will not be eligible to be a Sovereign Individuals I looked forward as eagerly as anyone to the replacement of the nation state with a new way a way that will not involve government confiscation or violent coercion particularly since I have a couple of speeding tickets due But this Bill Gates George Soros Marc Rich and yes Jeff Bezos will negotiate tax treaties with private armies and will be treated like customers instead of subjects while we little people will be left with an exhausted country that can no longer support itself because the taxes that are its lifeblood are no longer paid because the assets of the cognitive elite are safely ensconced and encrypted in cyberspace Rising crime falling services perhaps anarchy is what we'll be left with while the cognitive elite drinks rare vintages and rakes in billions in encrypted cybercash with just a few keystrokes probably while enjoying the view from the finest islands on the planetOne wonders Is there some way we can head off this exodus of society's most productive members and their tax dollars Come back I say come back Don't leave us here at the mercy of the Cosa Nostra and the Tong Triads and the Russian biznizmeni But wait what's this on page 215 The effects of freeing resources from systematic compulsion will vary greatly among jurisdictions This freezing of resources will bankrupt welfare states and enhance diseconomies to scale that are undermining large governments and all institutions subsidized by large governmentsAh ha Apparently it has not been decided yet whether to free or freeze the resources of the world If somehow the Information Elite can be persuaded not coerced into taking the latter course then there just might be a way to keep the resources from being encrypted You see with global warming it's going to be hard to keep a carton of peas frozen for very long much less all the non pea assets of the worldWe are indebted to the authors for giving us this freeingfreezing hint to preserve our way of life for a few years Tut uns Leid! I like independent thinkers and these two gentlemen certainly fit that description Although they are a little vague on their timing of the forecasts directionally they have a great track record for anticipating key events I think this book is correct in the events it foreshadows also For a variety of reasons some of which are spelled out in this book we all need to become much self reliant That is a direction that I personally approve of and am comfortable with If you have read their earlier books you can skim the first 138 pages and not miss anything I found that part to be slow going and not always worth the effort The rest was brilliant and insightful We are all subject to stalled thinking that leaves us comfortable with what we have been doing That can be dangerous especially when we are on board a ship with too few life boats like the Titanic or its modern day euivalent in the Welfare Society Those who wake up and act first will have a big advantage By reading this book and acting on its lessons you will one of those who do well Good luck Tut uns Leid!

Their bold prediction of disaster on Wall Street in Blood in the Streets was borne out by Black Tuesday. In their ensuing best sellar, The Great Reckoning, published just weeks before the coup attempt against Gorbachev, they analyzed the pending collapse of the Soviet Union and foretold the civil war in Yugoslavia and other events that have proved to be among the most searing developments of the past few years.   In The Sovereign Individual, Davidson and Rees-Mogg explore the greatest economic and political transition in centuries - the shift from an industrial to an information-based society. This transition, which they have termed the fourth stage of human society, will liberate individuals as never before, irrevocably altering the power of government.
