Themes are familiar to children, and written in beautiful and simple language that they can easily understand. We often read the book front to back at bedtime. It has several short stories written as poems or rhymes. I love how the illustrations look like real children and represent a multicultural neighborhood (as do almost all of Shirley Hughes's books). It is also excellent for teaching my bilingual child vocabulary like common antonyms, colors, and many other basic words about appearance and emotions. Endearing, calming, and charming.
