The Moth in the Iron Lung: A Biography of PolioMaready, Forrest By Forrest Maready

A fascinating account of the world’s most famous disease—polio—told as you have never heard it before. Epidemics of paralysis began to rage in the early 1900s, seemingly out of nowhere. Doctors, parents, and health officials were at a loss to explain why this formerly unheard of disease began paralyzing so many children—usually starting in their legs, sometimes moving up through their abdomen and arms. For an unfortunate few, it could paralyze the muscles that allowed them to breathe. Why did this disease start to become such a horrible problem during the late 1800s? Why did it affect children often than adults? Why was it originally called teething paralysis by mothers and their doctors? Why were animals so often paralyzed during the early epidemics when it was later discovered most animals could not become infected? The Moth in the Iron Lung is a fascinating biography of this horrible paralytic disease, where it came from, and why it disappeared in the 1950s. If you’ve never explored the polio story beyond the tales of crippled children and iron lungs, this book will be sure to surprise. The Moth in the Iron Lung: A Biography of PolioMaready, Forrest

This excellently researched book totally undermines the generally perceived wisdom that vaccines eradicated Polio.Once you read this book and other very well researched books such as JB Handley's How to end the Autism epidemic, HPV vaccine on trial and Dissolving Illusions by Dr Suzanne Humphries, you realise that the science behind vaccine safety and efficacy is very poor. Big Pharma has a vested interest in perpetuating the vaccine myth. To do this they use spin, propaganda and even fraud. They use corporate lobbying to manipulate mainstream media. They are only interested in making money and do not care about the ever growing catalogue of vaccine related injuries and deaths. They also use threatening and aggressive tactics to destroy or ostracise anyone in the field who challenges or queries vaccine safety and efficacy. The science is NOT settled. The accounts also provide a good background of the social history and developments in the science and industries of the time. I have recommended this book to many friends, all of them remarking how much they learnt and enjoyed the style and content. A revealing, thought provoking timeline which is not overly technical and easily transports you through the polio saga. A must for the bookshelf. I’ll be reading this one again. 284 pages Fascinating but also shocking and devastating, especially since we don’t seem to have learned anything from history. The same greedy mistakes and the same propaganda blinding us to what is really going on, is just repeated with impunity. 284 pages I loved everything about the book which reads almost like an detective novel including the authors clever way of introducing us to a number of extremely interesting, highly significant but little publicised facts concerning the lead up to a major historical event. The book encourages us to look deeper into the topic of polio and its devastating effects on public health and to draw our own conclusions about its origins. Was polio a result of natural occurring pathogens , toxicity, accidents , ignorance, cover ups, conspiracy, coincidences or simply a mixture of all or any of these? On reading the first chapter of the book my initial reaction was ‘how come I didn’t know anything about this before? Suffice to say, I didn’t want to put this book down until I finished reading it. 284 pages
