When I pre ordered this copy of Lord of the Rings, I literally asked myself whether I needed another copy. After all, the fantastic Hobbit & Lord of the Rings illustrated box set is fantastic and is literally all I'll ever need in a fine box. However, I am a right sucker for leather bound books and this one is a right beauty. I bit my tongue and made an impulse buy. £108 later and I've got possibly the finest Tolkien book I've ever seen.Everyone at this point knows the Hobbits tale. The one about that shiny gold ring that contains some life essence of the great dark evil Sauron. He needs the ring to retain his physical form and return to his former strength. The little guy (with their friends) go on a lengthy journey to rid Middle Earth of this evil by tossing this one ring into the fiery hell it was forged in. It's one of the finest books ever conceived and was adapted into a fantastic trilogy of movies by Peter Jackson. It's extremely influential and you'd be hard pressed to find someone who didn't know about it.I would think with that, it would be safe to assume that most people who are buying this lovely expensive copy have already read the book and own a copy (or a few). There's been some nice versions out there but none that quite matched this edition. It's a beautiful thick hard back book with a gorgeous leather spine. It has been printed in two colours on acid free paper, has gilt edging and the usual ribbon marker. It's housed in a lovely red hard back sleeve, with one of Tolkien's own designs on the front and a cardboard box covered in the original Middle Earth map. Inside the book, there are illustrations from Tolkien himself, thirty in total. There's a tonne of extras including some maps of Middle Earth and Mordor, a fantastic Kings Letter from the rejected epilogue for the book and some pages from the Book of Mazarbul. As a package, you can see why this is a little expensive. The quality of the pages are good. They're not thick like the illustrated collection but not thin enough that the pages appear transparent. The book isn't too heavy and the pages open up flat, which makes it perfect for this who enjoy reading for long periods of time. The extras features don't feel cheap and are great little things to put on display.I now have three big copies of this book and this quite easily the best. Sure, it did cost me an arm and a leg but this I believe is a copy that will do me until the day I die. It's made to be sturdy, to last and I can't wait to properly get stuck into it. This book is a must have for Tolkien fans who want that ONE copy. The previous illustrated editions are fantastic but this is just that one step higher. Check it out, you won't regret it! The Lord of the Rings: The classic fantasy masterpiece Supero expectativas The Lord of the Rings: The classic fantasy masterpiece Es una de mis sagas favoritas y tener este ejemplar en tan buen estado, la verdad es una delicia. The Lord of the Rings: The classic fantasy masterpiece Todos conocemos las virtudes de esta historia, así que me centraré sólo en la edición: Esta nueva edición en inglés nos presenta 38 ilustraciones hechas por el mismísimo Tolkien durante el proceso de escritura de ESDLA, algunas terminadas y otras aún en boceto, pero la The Lord of the Rings: The classic fantasy masterpiece Firstly, this book comes in a hard case with the picture of the entrance to Moria on the front. In this case, you will find the book which is stunning! Its red edges that make up the writing on the one ring look awesome and far too good to read :) The book is sealed within cellophane and I do not intend to open it, so I cannot speak for the internal elements of the book. All I would say is that my father passed away a few weeks ago and this story was what he would read to me as a child. I purchased this to remember my dad and to have a really special copy of a very special book. This 100% hit the mark in every department and I am so happy to own it. So the original limited run of just 6000 copies worldwide was scraped a while ago (otherwise these books would be worth several hundreds of pounds already) and a considerable number of these books were printed as a first run print. That said the books being sold by eg Blackwell's are now marked as reprints, at £94, hence the reduced selling price.I suspect that this suggests the second prints are now being sold, rather than the inference to the 2020 book. I did order a couple of the £80 copies from another seller which I now suspect maybe reprints. There was nothing to suggest this although technically that is not a requirement on their part. But distance shopping laws still hold, and so wait to see which copies I will return. Finally those keeping their copies pristine in its cellophane wrapping; be aware that the wrap is a temporary cover, and over time the acid in the cellophane will discolour and attack the book. The Lord of the Rings: The classic fantasy masterpiece This is the second copy of The Lord Of The Rings I've bought this week that surprisingly came in a presentation box, the box is glorious, any Tolkien fan will recognise the image. The book itself is equally stunning, the elvish lettering on the page ends is sublime, everybody knows how good the book is it now has packaging worthy of the books greatness. The Lord of the Rings: The classic fantasy masterpiece This book is very beautiful as you can see in other reviews, and it has some nice items and features that come with it. In this review I will instead discuss some of this book's blemishes. This is the illustrated deluxe slipcased 2021 edition, a single volume of the Lord of the Rings series that includes the books The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, and The Return of the King, along with the appendices and now illustrations by Tolkien.ISBN: 979 0 00 847129 3I pre ordered this book some time ago, and a few days before I received my copy I learned that some people received theirs with awful printing errors, in some cases making certain pages quite unreadable. When I finally got the chance to look at mine, I was thankful to find that my copy didn't have the same errors. Yet, it did have some blemishes and a few disappointments. One disappointment was the quality of the paper. The paper is thin and not as white as I expected it to be. I can peronally ignore it, but I have found that people in other circles familiar with collecting books and assessing production value were left disappointed. Personally, I think I can enjoy the book despite the lack of quality.A big disappointment with the book is that the paper the illustrations were printed on were the same kind of paper that the text is printed on. For purchasing a deluxe illustrated book, you would expect that the illustrations would be printed on a paper of greater quality one that is thick, glossy, and shows off the colors of each image. An example of a good book that does this is the 2004 illustrated edition of the Silmarillion by Ted Nasmith. Honestly, you could go on the web, download an image of one of Tolkien's illustrations, and use a cheap printer and expect the same quality of image. The most exciting thing about this edition was the illustrations, and they were given no special treatment as expected for a deluxe edition of the book. Finally, the blemishes. For whatever reason, the publisher HarperCollins did not ensure that all of these copies were held up to quality standards before sending them out. Some people have received a perfectly fine copy, and others like me have found gross printing errors for such an expensive book. You can see them in the photos, and you might be inclined to think I am nitpicking, but know also that I and many others have spent about £140 on this book or , or around $200+. I have cheap mass paperback editions of this story and there are no printing errors or blemishes in them. That's why I pre ordered this deluxe book! You can find a list of the errors I have found corresponding with the photos I posted below. If you want to purchase this edition because you are a collector, or because you want to show it off, then you should consider purchasing it. On the outside this is a very beautiful book, and it has a great slipcover as you can see in other reviews. However, if you intend to read this book (like me), I would wait for a considerable discount and for some better made copies.Photo list:cover page, yellow spotv, The Ring Verse (slightly faded image, might not be the fault of a printer)xvii, no partly italicized (underlined digitally by me)Cover of the Fellowship of the Ring (example of an illustration)731, yellow spot top middle734, pink spot bottom left736, black spot lower left756, faint blue spot bottom left828, black smudge in text The Lord of the Rings: The classic fantasy masterpiece
