The Conflict between El and Baal in Canaanite Religion By Ulf Oldenburg
Although Oldenburg's arguments on the relationship between El and Ba'al are intriguing and definitely tenable, his research is undermined by his complete dependence on Sanchuniathon's purported writings. Despite Sanchuniathon's historical existence being doubted and his supposed writings being available to us only though Eusebius of Caesarea's quotations of Philo of Byblos's supposed summaries of Sanchuniathon, Oldenburg treats Sanchuniathon as a scholar of Canaanite religions and thus dismisses all the Hellenistic influences in Sanchuniathon/Philo of Byblos/ Eusebias of Caesarea's genealogy of Phoenician gods. And although he attempts to use the Ugaritic texts to corroborate his reliance of Sanchuniathon's history of the gods, it is in the opinion of this reader that his full faith in Sanchunianthon taints his readings of the Ras Shamra texts.
