I have been working through this book, along with the manual that comes with the camera. The book does manage to clarify some issues with the manual poor clarity and lack of detail. However, the author would have done well to hire a copy editor and a third party guinea pig trying to actually use the book. There are a few errors of the nature, author says Olympus and means micro four thirds and that sort of thing niggles, but easily fixed. There are lots of passages that sort of duplicate what the manual offers but add no new knowledge. That is not terribly unusual sometimes we just need to hear something differently to get it.. Finally, there are some passages that are simply difficult due to turgid writing. I would point to the section on silent and anti shock shutter settings for that.
Because it is the only long form book currently available for the Olympus OM D E M1 II, it is definitely worth purchasing. If you are delving deep into the features of this camera, you need than the manual offers. With this book, certain popular blogs, and YouTube there is enough info out there to tame this highly technical and remarkable machine. As I write this we are on firmware version 1.x. Soon, a major firmware update, version 2.0, will be forthcoming from Olympus which will require revisions to significant sections of the book. I hope the author sticks with it, and indications are that he will. Readers can apparently register for extended content and possible future updates.
Note: I upgraded my original review of this book. English I got this as a Kindle E book. I really like how Tony Phillips writes. Seems like a very complete manual so far. Glad I got this. He offers a free pdf for your smartphone too. English Love these books. I bought his guide for my previous Olympus camera, the O md E m5 Mark 2, and have continued to refer to it throughout my years using that camera. I bought another guide for that camera as well, but Tony's was the one I constantly went back to.
So, I just upgraded to the E m1 Mark 2, and immediately bought this book. Tony doesnt just explain the features and options of this complex camera, he provides tons of real world tips for its use. In addition he provides handy guides for your portable devices so you can refresh your understanding out on the road. I am excited about my new camera, and happy to have Tony's book to guide me in learning to use it. English I found this book to be invaluable in trying to learn how to best customize this camera for my shooting style. There are so many options and it's hard to make sense of the camera manual in some cases. Tony writes things clearly for the most part and give tips on how to set the settings to advantage. English This is the absolutely complete guide to the EM 1 II. I've found everything I looked for, clearly explained and well presented. I'm very impressed by this book and this author. Thanks so much, Tony, for such a thorough job. English
The olympus cameras and menu system is very powerful. It is extremely flexible and allows dials and buttons to be customizable in many ways.
This book breaks down the menus and options and explains in detail how to set up the camera they way you wish.
This is a excellent on topics that are just touched on in the manual. Focus bracketing modes , Hi Res mode and flash.
Well worth the time to read and cost English If this were a printed publication, I would not have hesitated in giving it five stars. I have had a few hours delving into it and there is no doubting that the author using his own photographic skills has explored the cameras potential and explains clearly how readers can do the same.
What is essential in any technical reference book is the ability to link relavent topics. There is an attempt to do this in that links to other part of the publication. However having used the link, there is no way in the kindle format to return you to where you started. This is a major failing.
Surely there must be a publisher willing to put this excellent technical publication into print, so that it can be conveniently researched by devotees of the oly omd em1 mk2. English Informative, and a good guide round the EM1 MKII. English Answers all my questions. English A great book if you want to read 500 pages and not use your camera I found the book rather daunting and unless you are very much up in the Photographic field I would suggest don't get it because it would put you off the camera my advice is play with the camera like you would a mobile phone the you play with it the you get to know it used the handbook and progress slowly you will get much further I think there is a growing industry in writing these books the same people write on every camera and tell you how wonderful they are so I'll leave it up to you im getting to know my camera really well by playing with it making mistakes and moving on to the next bit.
