Kassay, a skilled craftsman, draftsman, and photographer, spent ten years researching his book, the most comprehensive study of the subject yet published. Americana

The fullest and most elegant presentation of Shaker furniture published to date. Choice
If you collect Shaker furniture, deal in it, or simply admire it, drop whatever you are doing and go out and buy John Kassay's The Book of Shaker Furniture. It is undoubtedly going to become a classic in the literature about the Shakers and their artifacts, holding a place with such pioneering studies as those of Edward Deming and Faith Andrews and important modern studies such as that of Robert Meader. When John Kassay began recording Shaker furniture in photographs and measured drawings than ten years ago, he brought to his task patience, skill, and the sensitive attention to detail that was characteristic of the best Shaker cabinet makers. It was worth the wait. The Book of Shaker Furniture, which will become a standard reference work, is a tribute to his ability and to his subject. Antiques
The Book of Shaker FurnitureThis is not a new book, I think it has a copyright date in the 1980s. It has to be one of the best sources of knowledge about Shaker furniture. There are several things I especially like. The author doesn't worship Shaker craftsmanship and plainly states that some pieces were just nailed together. Some authors would have you believe the Shaker dovetailed everything they made from wood. The author also includes Southern and Midwestern Shaker furniture which is sometimes not as stylistically pure as New England Shaker furniture. Pasta dura After some years of reading about shaker furniture and making the occasional cupboard, I was inspired to make a replica of the iconic candle stand on display in the American Museum in Bath after seeing Christian Becksvoort's article in Fine Woodworking magazine. This book was recommended by Christian, and I am really glad I followed his advice, as this book gives invaluable extra information, and includes detailed drawings of some other shaker pieces not often featured elsewhere. In my view this book is the next best thing to buying a plane ticket and taking my calipers and rules to the states. Pasta dura Just as advertised. Reasonably fast delivery. Pasta dura Put this together with Handberg's books, this make a great start to a reference library on Shaker furniture for those interested in reproducing or reinterpreting the form. Pasta dura
