An illustrated (black and white) overview of how a steel string guitar is built, including a section on the arch-top guitar.

The arch-top material is the main reason to read this book. Sloane lived in New York and had access to the D'Angelico and D'Aquisto shop, or at least to photos of John and Jimmy at work. He recounts walking down the street and seeing John D'Angelico at the window meticulously cutting plastic binding.

Jimmy D'Aquisto did an old-world Italian apprenticeship with D'Angelico in the 1950's. D'Angelico had other employees and at first didn't realize how much D'Aquisto had learned and the extent to which he was doing most of the difficult work. When D'Angelico died, D'Aquisto was able to take over the shop and very quickly demonstrated that the quality of his instruments was just as good.

These guitars were sought after by jazz players, so would never have mass market appeal. D'Angelico began by trying to compete with the Gibson L-5. He surpassed it but probably never got much monetary pay off for the accomplishment.

Sloane gives a brief, fascinating history of the two luthiers. I've always thought there was a real story here; it would be fun to tell the whole thing: New York City in the 50's and 60's, the jazz players, the Italian family life and culture. Maybe some day. 0933224168
