Show Up Dead: A Sweet Mystery from the City of Brotherly Love By Lisa Shiroff
“The last thing I expected when I planned this funeral was for him to show up dead.”
Peri Milano’s business card states “Lifestyle Manager”, a title she invented to take care of planning, coordinating and organizing routine events for her rich Philadelphia clients. Or in the case of Shelby Wooley, an unusual event—a funeral-themed party. If only he hadn’t shown up dead.
Show Up Dead is a humorous whodunit with delightful characters. Peri unwittingly investigates the case with the assistance (whether she wants it or not) of her complex, quirky mother, Honey Potts. One of Honey’s favorite pastimes is watching TV crime shows so naturally she fashions herself a detective. (She also calls Peri “poopsie” in public.) Peri’s cousin Melissa is also an enjoyable character, providing research and quips to the cause. Even the characters you aren’t supposed to like, such as ex-husband Todd, have fun qualities. Throughout the book the other characters insinuate Peri is a control freak, stressed, uptight and a busy body. But Peri is the glue that holds the story together.
The author, Lisa Shiroff, has a nice, easy style where the laughs sneak up on you. I highly recommend this book and hope she brings Peri, Honey and the gang back for more laughs and mystery.
Show Up Dead: A Sweet Mystery from the City of Brotherly Love Need a cake made in the shape of a walrus matching the exact hues of your favorite cartoon character? Need a janitorial themed party planed? Or do you need something simple like having your dog walked regularly? Who do you call?
Peri Milano takes care of the eccentric, the spoiled, the crazy, and even the normal on occasion. She handles everything and no detail is too small. So when a client shows up dead, no big deal, just add it to the list.
Lisa Shiroff brings the busy and complicated life of her characters straight to your imagination. You will have to read this in order for you to get your own taste of delightful and colorful characters. This story is more fun than my words could do justice for.

Peri Milano is one of those crazy people who loves to organise the lives of others, and as a lifestyle manager for hire, she gets paid for it.
This story is about Peri's wild adventures when her latest organised event goes wrong-dead wrong! We are introduced to our heroine as she emerges from a state of unconsciousness only to be faced with a host of cops investigating a murder, and one of the cops happens to be quite a looker too!
Chock full of great characters such as Peri's strange mother and the awful, over the top self centred Jacqueline, this is a really entertaining listen. It's fast paced, a good story and really, really funny, so good and so funny that I'm really hoping we will be treated to many more Peri stories - soon!
Narrator
Narrated by Jamie Soltis, and what a cracking job she did, I thought she captured the character of Peri exactly right, oh and her Jacqueline is hilarious, it's not always easy to pull off humour, but she nailed it.
Jamie energised the story perfectly, her narration has a good pace and rythym and her voice is easy to listen to. This was an excellent choice of narrator. Show Up Dead: A Sweet Mystery from the City of Brotherly Love In her job as a lifestyle coordinator, Peri Milano is used to handling EVERYTHING from party reservations to ball gown purchases.
Handling dead bodies, however, THAT's something new.
Now she's teaming up with her eccentric mother and her cousin's AWOL wife to find out who killed a favorite client. Peri's also looking for the scoundrel who's been sending threatening messages to another client AND dealing with the reappearance of her baby daddy who's suddenly showing quite an interest in their teenage son.
And if that's not enough, she's in the enviable position of being surrounded by eligible bachelors. (Don't worry, her mother's not about to let THAT opportunity slip by unnoticed.)
This was a hilariously enjoyable mystery, peopled with characters you'll want to spend time with. They are fun, witty and extremely likable. And Peri's conversations with her mother are priceless!
I hope the whole gang returns as soon as possible to banter, bake, and bust criminals Show Up Dead: A Sweet Mystery from the City of Brotherly Love Peri Milano juggles a million little details of her clients' needs and lives; and if that isn't enough, she has a family to control. The lead character and narrator of Show Up Dead could be the poster girl for the adage about giving a busy person something to do.
So the last thing she needs is a suspicious death throwing a monkey wrench into the works. But this is Philadelphia, and even Ben Franklin needed to get out of there eventually.
Author Lisa Shiroff does a spectacular job of creating the literary impression of many things going on at once, and keeps Peri managing them all. Show Up Dead is a fun story with enjoyable characters, and Shiroff's formidable sense of humor runs rampant throughout. This was a very enjoyable book. (Proceeds from the sale of this book will be donated to JDRF to support research for a cure for Type 1 diabetes.)
Self-described lifestyle manager, Peri Milano, has everything under control. With the organizational skills of a data processing program, the discretion of the CIA, and the creativity of an Ikea research and design engineer, she is the go-to for whatever whim her customers fancied to have fulfilled, and whatever method they needed for their madness.
So when Mr. Wooley asked her to plan a coming-out party with a funeral theme to say farewell to his “old” self, Peri has it under control. When he actually shows up dead, she’s still got it under control.
But as the murder investigation swirls around her and another client begins receiving threatening letters, her grip on the world starts to loosen. And when her son winds up in the hospital, her cousin winds up on the missing person’s list, and she winds up being responsible for an orphaned, adult soap-star wannabe, Peri’s not sure she wants to be in control of anything ever again.
But someone needs to figure it all out. And since she’s so good at it, what other choice does she have but to save everyone in her little corner of the world?
Hopefully she'll have time to save herself.
