I really love Amber's character is strong willed and smart, which is a rare thing to find in wattpad. Mass Market Paperback I'd give this book a 3.6-3.8 to be exact, but I'll be generous in giving this a four. I mean, being Aivan's best work so far and the most challenging he had, he deserves to have that rating.
Secret Nights mixes up the erotic, the romantic and the political. What started out as a young girl's story of sexual awakening became a complicated web of love, and at some parts revenge. By the time I learned it's inspired by the events of Yolanda I fell in love with it right away, more so how Aivan intertwined it with the erotica and the characters' personalities.
But as the story progressed on Wattpad I was disappointed how it fell to the telenovela trap - amnesia, the 'balikbayan' revenge, etc. Considering that it already started to be distinct, I'd expected a conclusion that's more distinct as well. You can already see the attempt to be more intellectual but it was not sustained, which made me sad.
The visual spectacle made up for that fault though - I can imagine the sunsets in Visca and all the other scenes as I read it through Amber's perspective. Aivan made Amber a great storyteller, and I'd love to see her views come alive in a movie in the future.
