Rough Ride (Chaos #4.5) By Kristen Ashley

Please Note: I am going to put a stop to the morality police comments right now. Don't come on my review and give me a lecture when it is VERY clear I was joking about a FICTIONAL character. No woman was actually beaten, it is FICTION. My comments pertained to a FICTIONAL character. Save your outrage for the REAL women and children that are abused daily. Better yet, instead of going around and posting outrage on other peoples reviews volunteer that time at a women's shelter. No one with a lick of SENSE or who KNOWS me believes I was saying it is A-OK for a woman to be beaten up on in REAL LIFE. Geez Louise people watch out for nosebleeds on those high horses you sit on.

So I went into this one riding a wave of hopefulness after reading THE HOOKUP by this author, and it didn't suck. I originally wasn't planning on reading it because let us be honest here Rosalie should have remained as a side character. She didn't need her own book (even a novella), and she most certainly didn't need to end up with a CHAOS brother. I mean who wants to sit across from their ex at every meeting and get together CHAOS has until the end of their natural born life??!! Certainly not me! I highly doubt ANYONE would.

I didn't hate it. It was just OK. I didn't particularly like Rosalie (surprise) she wasn't the brightest of bulbs and a bit of a backstabbing cheating whore. I guess I was supposed to feel for her as she was trying to get her man to not turn to the dark side but the entire time she was basically emotionally cheating with Snapper. She also kind of deserved a beatdown for ratting out her mans club. <-- just kidding. Kind of... (lol). I mean COME ON, she actually thought she was going to change the minds of an entire club? Anyone with half a brain would have just broken up with the guy and moved on. Moving on...I was thankful at least that Tab and Shy aren't mentioned or seen much. That said, the whole Tab scene at the beginning and the bestie friends with Tab and Shy at the end was stupid, and unrealistic, and unnecessary (IMO).

It was also a pretty short book. Especially for KA because even her novellas tend to be longish. The romance was pretty quick and not overly developed. It was also really light in the sex department. Honestly, this felt more like a setup book for the next CHAOS full length one (Hound's I think) with a half-ass romance thrown in. Other than Hap and Lanie's book the entire CHAOS series hasn't been great for me. But like I said, I didn't hate this one. So we'll chalk that up to a win (lol).

SIDE NOTE: I wish this author would put a little effort into learning some medical facts. Rosalie had NINE broken ribs, but she was walking around like she was taking a stroll through the fucking tulips two days later??. I'm not even a f-cking DR, and I KNOW that she wouldn't even be able to BREATH without extreme pain with NINE broken ribs, let alone walk around...sigh.

Sorry, I just can’t.

Snapper is Rosalie’s third Shy biker and she was betraying number two to boot - right or wrong, betrayal is betrayal and it just didn’t sit well with me. I just can’t get behind it.

KA comes up will a decent excuse reason why Rosalie feels the need flit from man to man...I’ll give you a hint, ahem, backwards “daddy issues,” and while I can...almost, sort of, not really, appreciate that, it just doesn’t doesn’t quite clean up enough of the “Snapper is Shy #3” vibes to make me feel like these two have anything special.

Sorry, but Rosalie is just reading like a freeloading damsel who can’t breathe without a man, preferably a biker, in her life who “reminds her of daddy.”

“Men are breakable. They just hide the cracks better than we do.”

When Rosalie gets beaten by her boyfriend and his motorcycle club for being an informant to Chaos, she wants nothing to do with that life ever again. But Snapper, the Chaos man who was partnered to her, isn’t ready to let her go, especially now that her boyfriend is out of the picture. Snapper has always wanted Rosalie, and now is his chance to prove it to her.

“If you care about someone, it’s not about going that extra mile. It’s about giving everything.”

I kind of laughed to myself when I received this arc, because when I think of a novella, I think 100 pages or less. Well, for Kristen Ashley, just under 300 pages IS shorter than her usual novel, but I loved every second of this book.

While I love the Chaos series by Ashley, I have to admit that I didn’t remember who Rosalie or Snapper were….. or even some of the other characters that I may have looked up while reading this novel. But despite not remembering them, I fell in love with this couple. My heart broke for Rosalie and I wanted her to get her happy ending. And Snapper got the chance to go after the girl he always wanted.

This is the kind of motorcycle club books I love, there will never be another series out there like this one.

“I found the one who was perfect for me.”

**I will note, this novella cannot be read as a standalone, it really only makes sense if you’ve read the other books in this series**

Rough Ride brings back a character we met early on in the series, Rosalie Holloway. In this novella she's ready to be done with the MC world, but they aren't ready to be done with her.

Snapper and Rosie had a pretty fast paced relationship but it still had the perfect mix of drama and heat. There was also a little action crammed into the story that added a lot of intrigue. As usual KA delivered a story that had a lot going on but never got to be too much to where it became jumbled.

I liked getting to learn more about this couple and I thought they were really good together. The chemistry was evident between them and I thought they just made a very cute couple.

The ending leaves the story open for more of the MC to get stories and I can't wait to see what's going to happen next.

”Life, Rosie,” he said gently, ”is not about goin’ it alone. It’s about finding the right people to share it with who will make it better when it’s good and be there to hold you steady when it’s not.”

I’ve yet to have the pleasure to read the ”CHAOS” series from the beginning and after having read Snapper and Rosalie’s story, I know I’ve been missing out. MOTORCYCLE MAN was my favorite book in the ”Dream Man” series, so to get to spend a little more time with Tack was really a pleasure.

The story opens with Rosalie being badly beaten by her ex-boyfriend and his crew from the Bounty MC. They found out that she was working as an informant for Chaos and sought out to punish her for her betrayal. But Rosalie had her reasons. She knew that the Bounty crew was getting mixed up with many illegal and dangerous activities and Rosalie had hoped to get her boyfriend away from that scene. What she ended up with was a broken body and a fear of getting involved with another man who would turn out to be a bad decision. Ever since her father died, Rosalie has been looking to find a man who could fill the gaping hole in her heart that he left behind. So far she’s gone from one dead end relationship to the next.

Snapper and the Chaos MC found Rosalie outside the warehouse where she was badly beaten. They all feel a sense of guilt because they view her as one of theirs and no harm should have come to the woman who was under their protection. So they set out to seek vengeance for Rosalie. Snapper is leading the mission since over the months of working closely with her, he ended up falling hard for her.

Rosalie decides that she’s going to live her life on her own terms without any help from a man, but Snapper isn’t about to let her go through with her new life plan. Neither is the Chaos MC. They all set her up with a new place to live and overwhelm her with their unconditional love and support. When Snapper makes his intentions known to Rosalie, she isn’t receptive at first. Her heart had already been broken twice and she’s positive she won’t be able to survive it a third time. But Snapper already sees Rosalie as his and he’s determined to convince her that they are the real deal.

Will Rosalie be able to let down her guard and accept the love of a really good man? Will the Chaos MC be able to keep her safe from those who seek revenge against her?

From New York Times and USA Today best-selling author Kristen Ashley comes a new story in her Chaos series…

Rosalie Holloway put it all on the line for the Chaos Motorcycle Club.

Informing to Chaos on their rival club - her man's club, Bounty - Rosalie knows the stakes. And she pays them when her man, who she was hoping to scare straight, finds out she's betrayed him and he delivers her to his brothers to mete out their form of justice.

But really, Rosie has long been denying that, as she drifted away from her Bounty, she's been falling in love with Everett “Snapper” Kavanagh, a Chaos brother. Snap is the biker-boy-next door with the snowy blue eyes, quiet confidence and sweet disposition who was supposed to keep her safe…and fell down on that job.

For Snapper, it's always been Rosalie, from the first time he saw her at the Chaos Compound. He's just been waiting for a clear shot. But he didn't want to get it after his Rosie was left bleeding, beat down, and broken by Bounty on a cement warehouse floor.

With Rosalie a casualty of an ongoing war, Snapper has to guide her to trust him, take a shot with him, build a them…

And fold his woman firmly in the family that is Chaos. Rough Ride (Chaos #4.5)

ROUGH RIDE

by Kristen Ashley

Who else felt wretched for Rosalie when Shy and Tabby ran into her at the mall in OWN THE WIND? When you experienced her pain for having lost her boyfriend to the daughter of Chaos' president. I was so hoping to get a story for Rosalie, simply because she was completely classy about it although you could feel how hard this was on her. Being dropped like a hot potato? Looking back, it was a shitty thing to do, Shy.

Unfortunately, suffering isn't quite over yet for Rosie. She has been spying on her boyfriend's motorcycle club for Chaos. She doesn't do it because she wants to see Bounty go down, no, her motives are much more personal. She wants to save her boyfriend from the illegal transactions going on within the MC but the more she realizes that notion is futile the more she falls in love with Snapper, her handler at Chaos. These are pretty much the impressions we got over the last Chaos books.

The book starts with a harrowing scene for Rosalie that ends with her in hospital with broken ribs, a fractured nose, countless bruises and a broken heart. And she's done. Done with her ex. Done with Bounty. And done with Chaos. She can't do it anymore. Too many people have let her down. And who can blame her after her recent ordeal? But all those people aren't done with her - especially Snapper, who has been in love with Rosalie for a long time. Plus, she still needs protection and Snapper is only all too happy to give it to her.
“Got you now, baby. I got you. Nothing will ever hurt you again. Nothing, Rosie. Won’t let it. Nothing, baby. Not a thing.”

You might have gotten the impression in the previous books that Rosalie lets people walk all over her. And that would be all wrong. She is the usual awesome, strong, lovable, sassy KA-heroine we love so much. I always root for Kristen Ashley's couples but I really wanted to see Rosalie's HEA after all she'd gone through.

Under Snapper's usual alpha exterior hid a gentle and sweet man who had all the time in the world wooing his Rosie. He left her time but pushed her enough to see so that she could see that they both wanted the same. Once they were at the same page it was pure bliss.

He hadn’t lied. I was his world. It was just a quiet, unhurried world where a roof over our heads and closeness (and a cozy fire) were all that was needed.

Of course we catch up a little with the rest of the Chaos members, especially because, being the men they are, they all are affected by Rosalie's rough time, they all feel guilty for not protecting her sufficiently.

This is a satisfying and lovely addition to the series. Again, KA gives us her usual brand of sweet romance and tension that I adore so much. I believe there are two more books left and I can't wait to read them. Heads up: I wouldn't recommend reading this as a standalone - there is too much background story in the previous books. But just as well, right? Because this series is awesome.
“You been my woman for months and I don’t give a shit that happened when you were with another man.”

I found the one who was perfect for me.

Rough Ride is a Chaos novella featuring Snapper and Rosalie. Rosalie is no stranger to Chaos. Rosie is Shy's ex-girlfriend and an informant for a rival club. When her deception is discovered, Rosie finds herself in grave danger. As Snapper and the Chaos brothers (and sisters) swoop in to help her recover, Rosie discovers that she was always meant to be part of the Chaos Family.

I am the master of my fate: I am the captain of my soul.
Overall, this novella was full of all of the Chaos shenanigans I have grown to love. Full of MC action, passion, and romance, Rough Ride offers a quick taste of Chaos love. Snapper and Rosie share a fast-paced romance full of passion and tender romance. I found this novella to be entertaining but certainly wish they could have had a full-length story in order to truly experience the growth and development of their romance. Even so, when KA is writing, I am always ready and willing to read!

Here's the deal...at this point, it's 100% my fault that I continue to reach new heights of excitement every time I get the word a new KA book is set to release, and then am subsequently disappointed the story doesn't love up to my expectations.

I'm totally setting the bar too high.

My love of old school Kristen Ashley clearly isn't translating to the modern day stuff, so take my thoughts with a grain of salt.

I love me some Chaos but this story needed to be a full length offering to get me to buy in. I went into this knowing exactly who Rosalie was and not minding one way or another that she was getting her own KA badass biker, but I still needed more time to connect with both her and Snapper's story.

And I'm thinking the Snap/Rosie/Shy/Tabby stuff would've been a wee bit more complicated IRL. GAH!

As a not so subtle aside, Rosie's overwhelming awe at having the supercool Chaos men and their ladyfolk at her house aggravated the hell out of me. I'm no longer down with the KA name drop game. Unless it's Luke Stark, in which case I'm down for whatever comes my way. Audio CD Well! That sure was a disappointment after the gripping intro where Rosie is being worked over by Bounty, so sue me for having high hopes that Rough Ride would continue in this vein because it so didn't. Instead I got a stretched out novella that was full of nothing but bloody filler, filler in a NOVELLA ... seriously? This included the necessary decor descriptions, clothing descriptions, food descriptions, a cameo with Tex and Indy (which in no way saved this one I might add), and THE MOST ridiculous, nonsensical, run-on sentences and paragraphs that even reading a couple of times made no sense at all. All this rambling and little in the way of an actual plot and story does not a good book make. Ever!

I liked both Snapper and Rosalie and was glad she got her happy after being shafted by Shy the Sh!t. Snap and Rosie make the cutest couple but somewhere along the way I must've missed the memo because kitty loving cuties and bikers clubs do. not. work. And don't even get me started on Tabby wanting to go all badass Ninja Biker Chick on a biker club with .... wait for it .... Shy's brass knuckles. Seriously. For reals! Off. the. scales. TSTL.

I also need to mention the bizarre ending that wasn't. Eh? What the hell was that? It was a doozy of a cliffhanger, that's what it was. Not impressed!

I'm going to be super generous with my 2 unimpressed stars. I'm in a good mood! Audio CD
