Nick Cave On Thursday 1 July, 1999, Dr Nina Simone gave a rare performance as part of Nick Cave’s Meltdown Festival. After the show, in a state of awe, Warren Ellis crept onto the stage, took Dr Simone’s piece of chewed gum from the piano, wrapped it in her stage towel and put it in a Tower Records bag. The gum remained with him for twenty years; a sacred totem, his creative muse, growing in significance with every passing year. In 2019, Cave – his collaborator and great friend – asked Warren if there was anything he could contribute to display in his Stranger Than Kindness exhibition. Warren realized the time had come to release the gum. Together they agreed it should be housed in a glass case like a holy relic. Worrying the gum would be damaged or lost, Warren decided to first have it cast in silver and gold, sparking a chain of events that no one could have predicted, one that would take him back to his childhood and his relationship to found objects. Nina Simone’s Gum is about how something so small can form beautiful connections between people. It is a story about the meaning we place on things, on experiences, and how they become imbued with spirituality. It is a celebration of artistic process, friendship, understanding and love. I did not think I could feel this way about an old piece of used chewing gum. What a great ride! Inglés I could not wait to get this book! I felt like I was gonna have a panic attack when I first read the title [& then the breath taking introduction] if I wasn't able to hd it in my hands & read it immediately. My sister friend, seeing my intensifying emotion while long knowing of my reverence for & unwavering Love for Nina Simone, quickly ordered the book for me & said it would arrive in 24 hours. I tried, but I couldn't wait that long & so ordered it on kindle. I can't even describe how i felt reading the words of this author who is new to me! My heart rate increased as I read & I felt like I was gonna spill over, head first & crash into the floor beneath the sofa i sat on to devour 58% of this book. If you are Love struck with Nina like I am & also like the author of this amazing book is, get. this. book. as soon as possible. Warren Ellis is one of the most distinguished musicians in today's music and his colab with Nick Cave is just amazing. Nina Simone's Gum is a great story about his passion of collecting memorable things.The things we collect are the things that are of significance to us first and foremost.
