Some of it I found a bit wishy washy and seemed obvious to me, which I skipped through. But an okay read Paul Polman This book is a real wake up call for all organisational leaders. Paul Polman and Andrew Winston masterfully highlight the future threatening climate challenges we are facing as a society and what action leaders need to take to help solve them. The recent COP26 was a clear step in the right direction but very few on a global scale are yet to commit and take real action to solve the biggest crisis humanity has ever seen, which threatens our future existence. It's private sector leaders that can take action fast and make a difference.Paul Polman and Andrew Winston are two of the greatest inspirational leaders, working hard to inspire and drive global change. In this book, amongst other things, Paul shares his story while at the helm of Unilever. His efforts have made a real difference to the planet and a positive legacy for this organisation. He has shown the way for many others to follow. And, critically, he has shown that moving to stakeholder capitalism strategy actually transforms growth and profitability he delivered 290% total shareholder return at Unilever during his 2009 2019 tenure. A win win for business and the planet. Here are just a few quotes that caught my attention (early in the book).Net positive is a business that improves well being for everyone it impacts and at all scales every product, every operation, every region and country, and for every stakeholder, including employees, suppliers, communities, customers, and even future generations and the planet itself.A company giving than it takes will not focus on profits with a side of philanthropy. Instead, it embraces purpose in the core of the business and creates value from values.Businesses that pursue a long term, multistakeholder model create value in many ways. Not every step is automatically win win, but over time the leaders save money, reduce risk, innovate , build valuable corporate reputations and brands, attract and retain talent, and have a higher employee engagement. This is undoubtedly one of the most valuable books that I have read in the last decade, if not longer. As an impact driven entrepreneur, I have made it part of onboarding for all new members of our team as it illustrates our purpose in the company perfectly. I highly recommend it to all business leaders from startup founders to large enterprise C level executives. We all need to take action to solve the climate crisis and Paul Polman and Andrew Winston offer plenty of actionable insights to help people take action. And this book is only the start of the global 'Net Positive' movement that Paul and Andrew have started Paul Polman This is required business reading in 2022. The authors speak from a strong position: they've practised what they preach. Some of it might come across as a little utopian, but better that than the head in sand attitude propelling humanity towards a cliff edge. Paul Polman

Runaway climate change and rampant inequality are ravaging the world and costing a fortune. Who will help lead us to a better future? Business. These massive dual challenges—and other profound shifts, such as pandemics, resource pressures, and shrinking biodiversity—threaten our very existence. Other megatrends, such as the push for a clean economy and the unprecedented focus on diversity and inclusion, offer exciting new opportunities to heal the world, and prosper by doing so. Government cannot do this alone. Business must step up.In this seminal book, former Unilever CEO Paul Polman and sustainable business guru Andrew Winston explode fifty years of corporate dogma. They reveal, for the first time, key lessons from Unilever and other pioneering companies around the world about how you can profit by fixing the world's problems instead of creating them. To thrive today and tomorrow, they argue, companies must become net positive—giving to the world than they take. A net positive company:Improves the lives of everyone it touches, from customers and suppliers to employees and communities, greatly increasing long term shareholder returns in the process.Takes ownership of all the social and environmental impacts its business model creates. This in turn provides opportunities for innovation, savings, and building a humane, connected, and purpose driven culture.Partners with competitors, civil society, and governments to drive transformative change that no single group or enterprise could deliver alone. This is no utopian fantasy. Courageous leaders are already making it real—and the stakes couldn't be higher. With bold vision and compelling stories, Net Positive sets out the principles and practices that will deliver the scale of change and transformation the world so desperately needs.Join the movement now at netpositive.world Net Positive: How Courageous Companies Thrive by Giving More Than They Take

READ THIS BOOK!Read this book if you are interested in how business can play a positive role in the world or if you want to find ways to make a difference in your work. Read this book if you are interested in business and leadership and how challenging they can be for those who want to shape a different future. It's a cracker.I ordered this, partly because I thought it looked interesting but mainly out of loyalty to Paul Polman, who is a man who remains a top leadership inspiration to me and so many others. From reading the pre blurb, I confess I wondered a little if it might be slightly dry or overtly preachy in style but when the book arrived, I picked it up and couldn’t put it down. The book tackles head on the complexity of thought process that so many leaders in business are going through, with stories and frameworks that really help.I like the focus of its approach:‘We did not want to debate capitalism here, but instead, in a practical way, to argue for the changing role that business must play to continue to earn its license to operate.’It’s an eminently practical focus on some HOW ideas for those who already know WHY it’s time for change and it’s a read which I think will (in the hopes of co author Andrew Winston) ‘inspire the business community to step up, accelerate and help lead towards a thriving world.’It’s also full of fascinating stories about the courage and complexity in the fight for Unilever’s Sustainable Living Plan the real challenges faced and what really happened. It’s always so useful to understand the stories from inside a business and there’s a lot in here to help everyone appreciate that it’s not easy to step up to the responsibility (and the opportunities) business has to move to positive action. And this book is not only for those who want to understand how business can play a positive role to help the world , but a reminder that they need to do that in order to thrive in a changing world:'A net positive approach not only prepares you to be competitive today, but important, positions you well to be among the winning companies and industries of the future.'An interesting read. An inspirational book. A critically important topic. One of the best things I've read all year and probably one of the most important highly recommended. Paul Polman I won’t repeat what many have said about the specific issues addressed within Net Positive or, particularly on the process and general content. The reputations of Paul Polman and Andrew Winston are equally well established which means that what you get in this book is a combination of real world experience and challenging, yet directive narrative for you, the reader to take your own step forward as leaders. This I think is the real value, that this book is a means through which you can do your own thinking, about business, the world and your role in both.In my mind, this isn’t so much about committing to a particular leading model of responsible business, but rather to a movement of responsible leaders, of which you have the opportunity to carry the baton forward, whatever the size of your own organization. In many ways therefore, this is a manifesto for change and anyone who has any inkling of the general challenges the world faces, should find this hugely insightful. Not necessarily unexpected, but I highly recommend. Paul Polman To much repetition, making it unbelievable boring to read. Paul Polman I LOVED this book! Very inspiring and refreshing, not your usual business book, for sure. A net positive business, is by the authors' definition, one that ‘improves well being for everyone it impacts and at all scales'. We live at a time when an increasing number Paul Polman This book is a must read for all leaders. It doesn't matter if you're in business, government, NGO or in education. If you want to be part of the movement to create a NetPositive world this book gives you tools and inspiration to to do so. NetPositive is about going from Paul Polman
