My

A heartbreakingly brilliant book that I couldn’t put down. The author has done her family and her dearly loved sister proud and I hope she manages to find some happiness and inner peace in her life. My Sister Milly (English Edition) eBook : Dowler, Gemma Being a Surrey lad originally from Kingston Upon Thames and having had a best mate living in Walton at the time, I recall well the most tragic events of this book. I even remember Milly's parents coming into the cinema where I used to work back in the day and making sure they could sit together when we were nearly sold out. Consequently, I so wanted to reach out to them at the time but it is evident from now having read this extremely vivid and personal account by Milly's older sister Gemma, I realise any kind gesture on my part at the time would have been entirely futile such was the great depth of their pain. So I hope my purchase of this book and the review I write now will in some small way add a tiny shred of comfort to its authour and her family. The narrative is an extremely personal one but written with great skill and care that one could be forgiven to think that Gemma Dowler was a full time writer with a great many books already under her belt (and perhaps that should indeed be her calling.) We are chronologically taken on her very intimate perspective of the trials of the family and everything they experienced both before and after Milly went missing and beyond. The narrative describes in great detail the first actions (or lack thereof) by the Police, their misdirection of focus on the father for their initial investigation, the horrifying discovery of Milly's body and the eventual arrest of the fat loathing toad faced Levi Bellfield and the court case that followed his arrest and the aftermath that would follow it. Until reading this book I was not entirely aware of the extremely poor treatment of the family by the higher echelons of the Surrey Police during their investigation nor of the poor court procedures in place for when such a family has to attend and give evidence against the person accused of murdering their daughter. There were many echoes in similar case history here including the treatment of the Hillsborough victims and the case of Colin Stagg who was nearly wrongly convicted of the murder of Rachel Nickel a few years earlier. If any book ever underscores the need of the Police to keep an open mind on an investigation and not telescope their efforts and attempt to make facts fit into wild theories, it is this one. No family should ever have to go through what the Dowlers went through and this work should be included as part of Police training. One can only be thankful that at least unlike in the case of Stephen Lawrence, the family had decent Family Liason Officers who were both sympathetic and caring. It must have been blindly obvious to even the most unskillful of detectives that this was not the case of a runaway child and while of course, they must investigate all avenues including those close to home they should consider that time is a major factor in the first 48 hours and vigour must be applied to every possible scenario, this was clearly not the case here.. Most tragically of all in the first 24 hours, Milly was initially being held prisoner only a couple of dozen meters from where she was taken and a chance to save her by swift and prompt action was completely lost. Bellfield was already known to the Police and there was a snatch attempt on a different girl only the day before nearby. Cross referencing these two obvious co incidences and a quick search of the area would have resulted in the same type of car being seen and led to an address. The greatest tragedy of all is that Milly could have been saved had the dog unit been deployed swiftly. I digress Once you begin to read this book, it's hard to put down for all the wrong reasons. I hate to use words such as gripping on a true tale that fills me with such sadness but many books in this genre are written by True Crime writers and not by someone so closely entangled to the events. Here Dowler has bravely taken the reins and done herself and her sister extremely proud, laying bare all her thoughts, experiences and emotions along with those of her mother and father for all the world to see. I cannot emphasize enough how extremely courageous a written work this is and it is so important that this unique perspective of this woeful tale has been brought into the public focus. It must have been so difficult to get through the finish line with many tears being shed. But I don't want to sound as if I am giving out false praise purely because my sympathy lies entirely with the family. Gemma Dowler has simply written an incredible book here which intentionally or otherwise reads like a captivating story which will hold you right through until the end. She takes the press to task, including how the Dowlers brought down The News of The World newspaper (Surely they all deserve a knighthood for that) and brings the true characters of tale vividly to life (Lovely Granny especially) guiding us through the mire of her families nightmare with the written skill of a master craftsman. I've read a shed load of books in my time and this is by far one of the best and I feel truly honoured to have been given this level of insight to such an intimate personal story. Gemma has ensured that her sister Milly, should be remembered for who she was and has painted such a rich portrait of her sister that is possible for the reader to almost picture her as an adult, had she lived. Know this Gemma Dowler, by writing this book you have done you and your sister proud and in taking this to the task you have shown the world the best part of humanity when you and your family went through the absolute worst of it. I cannot recommend this book highly enough. Lance Steen Anthony Nielsen My Sister Milly (English Edition) eBook : Dowler, Gemma Thank you Gemma. You are a warrior woman.
