Montreal

Usually I know why I don't like a book, but I'm finding it hard in this case. The protagonists in all these stories is basically the same guy - an American-born French-Canadian, dealing with issues of identity. The stories are bereft of any lightness or humour, and the character is an unlikeable drip. A bit like Woody Allen without the humour. I slogged through the stories hoping for a gem, or at least a change of pace, but I didn't find it. Very disappointing. Paperback The first book we're discussing in my new book club in Montreal. YAY!!

I've realized that I don't really like short stories that much. I prefer time for characters to really develop. I enjoyed the stories towards the end of the book more, especially the ones that revisited characters introduced in earlier stories. I recognized some of the places mentioned in the book, so that was neat. There were some interesting themes that should lead to a good discussion in November, I hope. Paperback

Here gathered together are the Montreal-set stories which made Clark Blaise famous -- such stories as `A Class of New Canadians', `Eyes', and `I'm Dreaming of Rocket Richard' -- alongside two new and unpublished Montreal stories, `The Belle of Shediac' and `Life Could Be a Dream (sh-boom, sh-boom)'.
