Hers was a story that was never told...until now.

Long before the Darling children came to Neverland, magic was a myth, fairies were unseen, and the legend of Peter Pan was summed up in a childhood story of a flying boy that stole the moon and kidnapped orphan children.

Princess Tiger Lily had heard all the stories dozens of times. While each retelling seemed more fantastic than the last, she couldn't help wondering if the tales were true. She would soon find out.

Following a surprise attack on her village, Tiger Lily was taken by pirates, her life placed in the hands of the unscrupulous Captain Hook. Her days were numbered -- that is, until the mysterious flying boy of her people's legends made himself known. Peter Pan relieves the captain of his captive, as well as his left hand, and flies Tiger Lily from the ship.

Faced with this legendary thief of Neverland, the princess is gripped with fear. However, she soon learns that Peter Pan is nothing like the stories she's heard. Slowly, her fear is replaced with a growing fondness for a boy who refuses to grow up. But just when her heart opens to the possibility of love, she discovers his true story, the reason he can never fall in love, and a secret that could end Neverland forever.

In Loving the Wind, learn the untold story of Tiger Lily, the history of Neverland and its inhabitants, and the tale of the boy who's stolen many a young girl's heart. Loving the Wind: The Story of Tiger Lily \u0026 Peter Pan

Crissi Langwell’s Loving the Wind: The Story of Tiger Lily and Peter Pan is a brilliant return to Neverland, chock full of fantasy, adventure and romance. Most importantly, though, it gives voice and dignity to a minor literary character, Tiger Lily, the Indian princess, who was woefully ill-treated in J.M. Barrie’s original work. In the 1911 version of Peter Pan and Wendy, Tiger Lily is rescued from the pirates by Peter Pan. After that scene, she speaks only once, when she and her braves have come to Peter in gratitude for this feat. Her lines are these: “ ‘Me Tiger Lily,’ that lovely creature would reply. ‘Peter Pan save me, me his velly nice friend. Me no let pirates hurt him.’” She is not mentioned again until a skirmish with the pirates, when the whole tribe gets demolished.
Langwell’s Tiger Lily rises above that stereotyped, one-dimensional character. Here we find a young girl, looking for her place in the world. She is courageous and talented, a leader of her people, a hunter and a warrior, but also flawed and searching, like any hero. Through a series of adventures and challenges, she finds out who she truly is, in a classic coming of age story - that just happens to involve fairies, pixie dust, Lost Boys, fantastically wonderful Neverbeasts, mermaids, and a maddeningly elusive boy who never grows up. Tiger Lily loses her heart to Peter Pan; but you will lose your heart to Tiger Lily.
Romance, Contemporary, Young Adult “His hair cascaded around him in curls, giving the appearance of blackened cattails framing his handsome face. His eyes were the shade of the deepest part of the sky ...I thought I saw a glimmer of red within th blue of his iris... Most menacing of his presence was the gold hook...” from Loving the Wind ~A throughly delicious first impression of Cap’n Hook through the words of Tiger Lily.

Reintroducing us to the mischievous endlessly young Peter Pan first introduced to the world on Stage in 1904 by Scottish novelist and playwright J. M. Barrie, then most known in the animated feature by Walt Disney in 1953. Crissi Langwell takes on an almost sacred story, that has been endlessly retold, with an entirely new take, from an new set of eyes and perspective. This is a excellent re-imagining of the story, through the eyes of Tiger Lily, the teenage daughter of the tribal leader who lives under the eye of expectation of being the chiefs daughter. She is an independent young woman in a paternalistic society who finds her own voice and power. This is a tale of the challenge of growing up, not staying endlessly young, that all of us go through in those awkward years from childhood to becoming a ‘grown up’.

With that being said this is a great adventurous tale, sometimes dark, but rollicking, enchanting, and engaging, set in the familiar Isle of Never Land, with well known characters of our modern mythology imagined anew. I found myself completely identifying with Tiger Lily, and that in itself, for myself makes for a great tale. This is fine for younger readers, but make no mistake this is not the Disney cartoon fairytale. A most excellent book. I really enjoyed it. Romance, Contemporary, Young Adult Crissi Langwell shines a new light on the legendary story of Peter Pan, through the eyes of a new character, Tiger Lily. Not an easy task, considering how popular the Peter Pan story has become over time. The author allows us to see the boy through the eyes of a Neverland tween-age native girl trying to figure out how she fits in to her tribe. Peter flies into her life with his charming immaturity and just confuses and challenges her thoughts even more.
The adventurous plot pulls the reader along, as old evil Captain Hook fills villeins roll well, while his pirates provide just enough wicked comic relief. Tinker Bell is back with a different slant and Tiger Lily's point of view of Neverland leaves many lessons to be learned. Young adult girls should enjoy this new look at the boy who never grew up. Romance, Contemporary, Young Adult I think of all the retellings of Peter Pan this one is the best. I wouldn't say favorite but better than the other two I've read so far. Loving

In Loving the Wind the story of Tiger Lily and Peter Pan soars in to action. As the tribe’s legends come to life, Tiger Lily finds her strong beliefs are challenged. In her heart she feels that women should also be allowed to become warriors for her tribe, the Miakoka people. In author Crissi Langwell’s novel, Tiger Lily finds Peter Pan is real, and not just a legend of her tribe. Together, Tiger Lily and Peter Pan take on Captain Hook as they fight to save the island from the pirates. Let the battles begin. Romance, Contemporary, Young Adult A lovely coming of age story -- on the first hand, Loving the Wind is a sweet homecoming to a land that many of us have grown up with (surely much to the contempt of the eternal Boy) full of familiar characters, many of whom gain depth and color in this telling. Not only is it a fun fairytale, however, it is a relatable story for any young woman struggling with growing up with the expectations and pressures of the prescribed gender roles of a misogynistic society, for any young woman struggling with the pain that can come of falling in love with someone impossible. It is about that brief period of time when the transition from child to adult occurs. It is about standing on one's own two feet but also knowing when it is okay to need others and so much more. An exciting adventure, and a great story to share, I think. A great choice for any devotees of Neverland. Romance, Contemporary, Young Adult This is a gorgeous book!
Lovely telling of a story we all think we know. Tiger Lily emerges as a brave, authentic young woman, trying to manage her own gifts and passions in the context of her predetermined fate as the future Princess of the Miakoda tribe. There are pirates and fairies and moons and magic. And of course, there's Peter Pan.
I'm reluctant to reveal much plot here, because it's all just delicious. Langwell is a gifted storyteller. Her characters are true and magic all at once, a hard balance to strike in a book like this one. Her language is lyrical and engaging--this is a hard book to put down, and I'm so grateful to have found it.
In a way, this book is a wish for all young women, that they might know magic, love, adventure, and just the right amount of loss to grow into their best selves. Cannot recommend it highly enough. Romance, Contemporary, Young Adult This story has a feminist twist in the back-story of the classic Peter Pan tale. Told through the perspective of Tiger Lily, it takes you through a dark journey where she ultimately discovers her power. It’s a fun read for anyone who loves the magic of this childhood favorite. Crissi Langwell does a great job imagining the deeper feelings that might have come into play if another version of this story were told. Romance, Contemporary, Young Adult
Loving the Wind has been a playground for my mind! Before reading this book I hadn't visited the story of Peter Pan since I was a child, but Langwell did such an amazing job of setting the scene for this story, that I didn't need the details to be totally engrossed in this book. Not only was the story completely enchanting, but the underlying story of Tiger Lily growing into a strong, independent, and emotionally healthy woman was beautiful, and inspiring.

I highly recommend this book to everyone looking for a new adventure! Romance, Contemporary, Young Adult
