I think a favorite of mine of Tardi's standalones, the translation's not so bad, has a hell of a lot going on, I didn't pay so much attention to the talky climax but everything else was great, good good noir thriller Hardcover This is a quick, but very good read. So few comics artists can get this type of comic to actually feel cinematic, but Tardi pulls it off. Plays out a lot like a well-constructed spy thriller and manages to add some motivation and background to the protagonist. I'm not ecstatic about the very end, but I guess if the ending had been more predictable, it probably would not have been as good. Hardcover So good. Love Tardi. This is him flexing so many muscles. Hardcover A great little crime story. I love the cyclical nature of the ending, and I love how nobody seems to really like the protagonist. It's almost funny at times.

What really makes it work, though, is Tardi's cartooning. He's absolutely fantastic, using architecture in wildly fascinating ways, and he really understands how to make the eye move. I might have liked West Coast Blues just a hair better than this one and *spoiler alert* the ending of this one is incredibly bleak. It is a really great, dark work though and reading through it is like getting a chance to watch a previously undiscovered classic Melville or Dassin movie. LOVE. Hardcover

Superb. Jacques Tardi adopted The Prone Gunman by Jean-Patrick Manchette and its splendid. Without a doubt Manchette is my discovery of a new(ish) noir writer - and his stuff is pretty bleak, in a very French style of course. Nevertheless the narrative is about a trained assassin who wants to quit his work, but alas can't. He has a thing for Maria Callas and a tender heart - that is hidden from everyone, including himself. But make no mistake he's a murderer. Tardi's illustrations are pretty perfect, and visually he tales the tale. This is the second release in English of this dynamic dual. One hopes that there are other titles lurking ahead or in one's drawer someplace in the latin Quarter. Απολαυστική ιστορία που διασκεύασε ο αγαπημένος Γάλλος, αλλάζοντας κάποια σημεία στο σενάριο που εκ των υστέρων διαβάζοντας την περίληψη του βιβλίου του βγήκαν προς το καλύτερο. Το σκίτσο είναι εγγύηση με ένα από τα πιο αγαπημένα μου καρέ γενικώς (αυτό της μεταφοράς του Κρίστιαν στον Κοξ). Νουάρ ιστορία με πιστολίδι, ξεπεσμένες φιγούρες, μαυρίλα, χυδαιότητα του υποκόσμου, τραγικό και άσχημο φινάλε και μια εξαιρετική ροή, τελειώνει πριν το καταλάβεις. Απολαυστικό κλασικό αστυνομικό κόμικ, αξίζει όχι μία αλλά πολλές ματιές.

Η έκδοση αξιοπρεπής στην εκτύπωση και το στιβαρό δέσιμο, τα μικρά βιογραφικά αρθράκια συμπληρώνουν την καλή εντύπωση αν και το αφιέρωμα στον πρόλογο για τις πολιτικές και κοινωνικές επεκτάσεις του βιβλίου του Μανσέ μπορούσε και να λείπει, περιείχε εντυπώσεις που τις βλέπεις στην ιστορία αν θέλεις να τις δεις και όχι γιατί όντως υπάρχουν. Το διάβασα από περιέργεια και το αντιμετώπισα με σκεπτικισμό. Το μόνο που με χάλασε είναι ότι διάβασα μετάφραση της μετάφρασης, ήτοι κατά λέξη μεταφορά της έκδοσης της Fantagraphics. Θα προτιμούσα κάποιος γαλλομαθής να έπαιρνε το ορίτζιναλ και να δούλευε σε αυτό.

Βέβαια δεν παύει να είναι ένα πάρα πολύ καλό κόμικ για 7-9 ευρώ, λιγότερο της μισής τιμής που *δεν* βρίσκεται το αγγλικό. Και φυσικά ποτέ δεν χαλιέμαι όταν βλέπω το όνομα Ταρντί στο εξώφυλλο (και ας έγραψαν το μικρό του jaques αντί για jacques σε όλη την έκδοση). Μανσέ-Ταρντί είναι τοπ συνδυασμός, επιβεβαιώνεται για ακόμα μια φορά μετά το Μελαγχολικό κομμάτι της δυτικής ακτής και άλλων. Πρόκειται για τη μεταφορά του γνωστού ομότιτλου νουάρ μυθιστορήματος του καταπληκτικού Ζαν-Πατρίκ Μανσέτ. Το μυθιστόρημα το διάβασα το Δεκέμβριο του 2010, οπότε δεν θυμόμουν και πολλά πράγματα από την πλοκή και τους χαρακτήρες. Καλό αυτό, γιατί απόλαυσα την ιστορία σαν να τη διάβαζα για πρώτη φορά. Φυσικά εδώ δεν θα σχολιάσω το μυθιστόρημα -το οποίο είναι καταπληκτικό και απαραίτητο ανάγνωσμα για κάθε φανατικό των σκληρών νουάρ θρίλερ-, αλλά το κόμικ: Μιας και μιλάμε για τον Ταρντί, η μεταφορά κρίνεται άκρως επιτυχημένη και αντάξια του μυθιστορήματος.

Η ιστορία αυτή καθαυτή είναι πολύ ικανοποιητικά δοσμένη, κρατάει τον αναγνώστη στην τσίτα από την πρώτη μέχρι την τελευταία σελίδα, χάρη στην όλη δράση, την ωμή βία, την τρέλα, την ένταση και την αγωνία που υπάρχει για την κατάληξη του πρωταγωνιστή. Και ποιος είναι ο πρωταγωνιστής; Ένας πληρωμένος εκτελεστής, ο Μαρτέν Τεριέ, ο οποίος θέλει επιτέλους να σταματήσει τους σκοτωμούς και να πάρει το κορίτσι που άφησε πίσω, πριν από αρκετά χρόνια. Όμως η Εταιρεία δεν πρόκειται να τον αφήσει να φύγει έτσι απλά, γιατί έχει άλλα σχέδια γι'αυτόν. Ο Τεριέ θα υποχρεωθεί να συνεχίσει για μια ακόμα δουλειά. Όμως, μήπως του την έχουν στημένη; Μήπως τελικά είναι απλά το ασήμαντο πιόνι ενός διεφθαρμένου συστήματος;

Το σχέδιο είναι το γνωστό που μας έχει συνηθίσει ο Ταρντί, σίγουρα πολύ καλό και απόλυτα ταιριαστό με το ύφος και την ατμόσφαιρα της ιστορίας του Μανσέτ. Οι σκηνές βίας είναι δοσμένες με την απαραίτητη ωμότητα, τα διάφορα σκηνικά -τόσο εσωτερικά όσο και εξωτερικά- είναι εξαιρετικά και μεταφέρουν τον αναγνώστη σ'έναν ασπρόμαυρο κόσμο βίας και διαφθοράς. Με λίγα λόγια, ο Ταρντί καταφέρνει με χαρακτηριστική ευκολία να μεταδώσει στους λάτρεις των κόμικς τον κυνισμό, την τρέλα και τη μαυρίλα που χαρακτηρίζουν τα μυθιστορήματα του Ζαν-Πατρίκ Μανσέτ. Hardcover I just finally read the Manchette classic French noir novel traslated into English with the title The Gunman, or The Prone Gunman, or this title the comics great Jacques Tardi uses for his adaptation. To be clear, Tardi follows very closely Manchette's story and dialogue, as his way with several adaptations of Manchette's crime novels. I just reviewed the book, widely regarded as Manchette's masterpice, a stripped-down--which is to say unromantic, unemotional, bare bones description of a series of brutal murders in the life of a contract killer. Tardi is a master as always, honoring a master, and now that I have read it through after the original, I so much more appreciate it, the style, the exitsential and political purposes, the social commentary. Comics and crime classic by two masters of their crafts. Hardcover

Like many of the greatest noir thrillers, Like a Sniper Lining Up His Shot begins with a classic, even clichéd set-up: Martin Terrier, the hired killer, needs just one more big job so that he can turn in his guns, return to his native village to find and marry his childhood sweetheart, and retire.


But nothing goes as expected, his “last job” turns out to be a set-up that results in a bloody shoot-out from which Terrier barely escapes with his life, and soon he’s on the run from not only the authorities and his treacherous ex-bosses but also the members of a crime syndicate still seeking revenge for an earlier hit on one of theirs. (We won’t even mention what they do to his cat.)


With Like a Sniper Lining Up His Shot, Tardi, at the top of his form, once again puts his lushly efficient neo-clear-line style in the service of Manchette’s gleefully brisk prose for a spectacularly dark, violent and fast-paced crime thriller that will delight fans of their previous collaboration, West Coast Blues.
