Good to see such an up to date and reasonably comprehensive guide to the area with a good deal of useful information and many illustrations, often with little drawings of plants not photographed. We need guides like this of Portugal and Spain. Comprar para otros This is a great achievement made not by improving other on previous authors; efforts but essentially from scratch. A very thorough and well researched flora for one of the world's finest wildflower destinations. Good pictures/diagrams, clear text, and priced reasonably too. Excellent! Comprar para otros
Good level of detail to enable confident identification of flowering plants in the Algarve. A reasonable level of familiarity required with Botanical terms. Comprar para otros For anyone planning a visit to Algarve, this is a well written and adequately illustrated account of the region's flora. In the limited space available the authors did a very good job in distinguishing between similar species by carefully highlighting the main diagnostic characters. Line drawings are useful and accurate. The photographs, however, are less than outstanding, and many important species are not depicted at all, although others are illustrated by as many as three pictures. As the authors themselves recognize, this book is not complete, and the selection is biased by their own knowledge of the region. The flora of the (comparatively unspoiled) southwest of Algarve gets the most comprehensive coverage by far. Among the sad omissions are the four species of the genus Klasea (formerly Serratula) in Algarve, of which two are Portuguese endemics and one is an Iberian endemic. The authors have decided to omit flowering period, since for most species this would be from March to May, and in the text they would point out the exceptions to this rule. Regrettably, they do not live up to their promise, failing in many instances to mention that the species flowers in autumn or winter (e.g., Iris planifolia flowers from December to January). The book would have benefited from a careful revision, since a few pictures are wrong (e.g., Omphalodes linifolia and Quercus lusitanica) and others have their captions mixed up (e.g., Anemone palmata and Ranunculus ficaria). As for Quercus lusitanica, the authors are entirely mistaken in describing it as a tree up to 20 m high: it is a low lying shrub that seldom reaches up to your knees. But these are quibbles that can easily be repaired in future editions. The authors are to be thanked for writing a pioneering field guide which is a very good book on its own right. No comparable guide to the flora of Algarve exists in any other language, not even in Portuguese. But readers of the book may wish to supplement it by looking up pictures of the plants on the Internet. Two very good resources are Flora On ( about Portuguese flora, includes pictures, distribution maps and flowering periods) and Flora Sivestre del Mediterráneo ( excellent pictures and also flowering periods). I bought this book as a gift and after using it for a while, I can now say that it is a good book to start learning about the Algarve's flora. The descptions are fine, although I first have to get used to some terminology used. I just wish the pictures were of better quality (I can spot easily a small repeating pattern from the printing which renders the fine details away). Nevertheless, it's a fine book and if you want to learn quickly about the Algarve's flora in a couple of days, I recommend it. Comprar para otros
