The angst, the misery, the bleakness combined with the author's writing style and the keen attention to detail and description, just hits something in my heart and shrivels it. It's been a long time since I'd come across a book as riveting as this one. In fact, I got so invested in the characters and the story that at some point I actually felt desolate over this for days.
