Crazy Rich Asians is the outrageously funny debut novel about three super rich, pedigreed Chinese families and the gossip, backbiting, and scheming that occurs when the heir to one of the most massive fortunes in Asia brings home his ABC (American born Chinese) girlfriend to the wedding of the season. When Rachel Chu agrees to spend the summer in Singapore with her boyfriend, Nicholas Young, she envisions a humble family home, long drives to explore the island, and quality time with the man she might one day marry. What she doesn't know is that Nick's family home happens to look like a palace, that she'll ride in private planes than cars, and that with one of Asia's most eligible bachelors on her arm, Rachel might as well have a target on her back. Initiated into a world of dynastic splendor beyond imagination, Rachel meets Astrid, the It Girl of Singapore society; Eddie, whose family practically lives in the pages of the Hong Kong socialite magazines; and Eleanor, Nick's formidable mother, a woman who has very strong feelings about who her son should and should not marry. Uproarious, addictive, and filled with jaw dropping opulence, Crazy Rich Asians is an insider's look at the Asian JetSet; a perfect depiction of the clash between old money and new money; between Overseas Chinese and Mainland Chinese; and a fabulous novel about what it means to be young, in love, and gloriously, crazily rich. I ordered this set of books for my wife. She has read the first of them and says she really liked it. She expected a light, fluffy read, and though they’re not considered “great literature”, she said there is much to them than she was expecting. Crazy Rich Asians Audible Audio Edition: Kevin Kwan, Lynn Chen, Random House Audio Wow! I’m so glad I read this book. It’s so well written and the culture aspect was EVERYTHING. I enjoyed all the characters, every aspect of them and by the end I totally understood why they were the way they were. It’s all about your surroundings and the way society deems you to present yourself. Everyone portrays themselves to be someone they are not or they portrayed themselves to be an exaggerated version of themselves! If I’m not mistaken the Asian culture goes back so far and there are so many social norms and unwritten rules that people abide by that to outsiders looking in it’s insane! That’s why I think it was so awesome that we got to understand each characters perspectives especially Rachel and Micheal! By the end, I would say around 80% onwards we really get down to the nitty gritty and that last 20% was so amazing I couldn’t get enough, I couldn’t read those pages fast enough!! A book has never made me want to visit anywhere as much as Crazy Rich Asians. I HAVE to visit Asia at least once in my lifetime the world building was amazing, the description was on point and I could imagine ever scene in my head perfectly! Everyone should really read this, I am a strictly romance reader but this book has really opened my eyes! I’m going to read the next two books as soon as I can which probably won’t be for a while but I have to see how the story continues after this Happy for now ending! Crazy Rich Asians Audible Audio Edition: Kevin Kwan, Lynn Chen, Random House Audio From some of the reviews I initially thought this was going to be a quick chicklit read but it was brilliant. I really enjoyed the story which was really unique, having an Asian perspective rather than a typica British/American romance. I loved the tips and notes on the different cultures and I felt really emmersed in that world. I haven’t had a book in ages where I couldn’t put it down, but I read this in a few days. Really good storyline and brilliant read. Clever, original and really entertaining. Crazy Rich Asians Audible Audio Edition: Kevin Kwan, Lynn Chen, Random House Audio Money is the root of all evil. is the quote I would use to describe what happens in this book. It is an interesting read but is a sad commentary on a specific peoples in their bid to be accepted in society. Very modern and full of clichs. Crazy Rich Asians Audible Audio Edition: Kevin Kwan, Lynn Chen, Random House Audio I really enjoyed this book! I went on to read the rest of the trilogy from the library online after this book. I admit I watched the movie first and then the book. But I love the background we get on the characters from the book. It was a great read Crazy Rich Asians Audible Audio Edition: Kevin Kwan, Lynn Chen, Random House Audio
This story got repetitive very quickly. First, the descriptions of the luxury Rachel witnesses don't vary much, so you end up reading a lot of lines about the most delicious dessert Rachel had ever eaten and the biggest house Rachel had ever seen and the most luxurious this and the most expensive that. After a while, your eyes just sort of glaze over.
Another problem was that I quickly realized that there are only three kinds of scenes in this book that keep repeating with different characters and settings. Scene 1: a character goes to some fancy location so the reader can gawk at the luxury along with the characters. Scene 2: Characters talk about how awful Rachel is, and trade gossip we've already heard. Scene 3: a side character has a scene unrelated to Rachel, Nick, or the main plot. Crazy Rich Asians Audible Audio Edition: Kevin Kwan, Lynn Chen, Random House Audio I watched the film a while back after everyone kept talking about it; and I wasn't impressed. And then everyone told me to buy the book as it's way better than the movie
So I did. And I just finished reading it. To be fair, it took me a long time to finish reading it as I could never get myself to read this over other books that I have.
It's true that the book is significantly better than the film; but it doesn't make the book a good one. Crazy Rich Asians Audible Audio Edition: Kevin Kwan, Lynn Chen, Random House Audio It's not often that I say this, but the movie is much better than the book and for once hollywoodizing the book has actually made it much better, and much cleaner. The movie is rated pg 13 but the book should be rated R. If I rate it for content then the book contains lots of swearing, mature content, and some nudity.
I really wanted to like the book and I did like the character Astrid in the book, and it was interesting to hear some of the backstory of the characters, but overall it is not interesting enough to read the sequel.. I'll just wait for the movie. Crazy Rich Asians Audible Audio Edition: Kevin Kwan, Lynn Chen, Random House Audio Cheezy AF and stupid, yet engrossing for its detailed descriptions of certain aspects of modern Asian life
An exceptionally easy read (I inhaled it in over the course of 3 days) made fascinating by all the detailed descriptions of modern Asian life and let's be honest of the lifestyles of the rich and famous (or secretively anonymous). An egrossing glimpse into a multitude of faraway cultures of the Orient which makes you long to visit and experience at least some of it first hand.
The story itself is incredibly clichè, trivial and misogynist (what else to expect from a male author from a traditionally patriarchic background, lah), all the characters are much too two dimensional cardboard cutouts to be of any real interest, their behavior too stereotypical to bear any semblance to any living human. Almost all the men with the exception of only 2.5 are portrayed with entirely too much sympathy, despite the atrocious things they do, while most women are either vapid vicious vipers or the embodiments of some moist male fantasy about the ideal woman™. Certainly not too intellectually overburdened. In other words, perfect Hollyweed material. Crazy Rich Asians Audible Audio Edition: Kevin Kwan, Lynn Chen, Random House Audio This one took me awhile to get through. I'm ranking it half a star higher than I'd like to because even though I enjoyed it there were so many characters to remember. Then the footnotes! I've never read a fictional piece with footnotes before. Apart from these two biggies, I found the story intriguing and teeming with juicy gossip, etc. I'm undecided if I want to continue reading this series as the first book has got me asking some questions about the relationships between some characters. Yeah, now that I think about it, I'll probably pick up the next book. Crazy Rich Asians Audible Audio Edition: Kevin Kwan, Lynn Chen, Random House Audio
