Back in the mid-nineties I happened upon a novel named Clueless, based on the film Clueless, based on Jane Austen's Emma. I read it. It opens with a dream sequence in which our heroine Cher is dubbed Clueless by her deceased mother. Her mother has a bread-scented hand. There is a glossary of terms, as if. That's all I remember. 164 As if! Whatever. I'm Audi. Carpe Diem! And I'm all... plus the question of whether one should date a boy who dresses better than you do (hmm, what will you then bring into the relationship?) These catch-phrases have been popularized by the movie Clueless back in the late 1990s and I was enough of a fan to buy the movie tie-in book of the film. Don't look for anything with deep literary meaning here, just read this chick lit for what it is: something to relive the movie with and to enjoy in an otherwise boring car trip.
Meet Cher--she lives in Beverly Hills with her father, has her wardrobe on computer, and drives a Jeep even though she doesn't have a license. She wants to do good -- like arranging for two of her teachers to fall in love or rescuing a New York transplant from teenage hell -- all the while trying not only to give others the benefit of her fashion advice but also to makeover her soul.
The book stayed very close to the movie but I liked the book a tad bit better because you get to learn more about the characters. I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves the Clueless movie and/or the now defunct tv series.

Reviewed By Purplycookie 164 One of my favourite books when I was 12 so I just have to re-read it at some point. I used to go to the local library just to get this book and I'd read it over the weekend and take it back on the Monday after school. For most of my pre-teen years, I wanted to be Cher and live in Beverley Hills, as sad as that sounds the only thing I wanted from life was a Mercedes Benz convertible and the right to use my dad's credit card to buy whatever the heck I wanted. Perhaps this experience, this false expectation of life at age 12 is where my current financial disobedience stems from... 164
How do I read the books I dont know how 164 More or less a Movie to page adaptation. It was nearly like reading the script to the movie (so many verbatim lines.) I mean it was a nostalgic and a really quick read but it would've been cool to see a different side of Cher but hey for what it was, it was pretty good :) 164
Live what you believe. Do unto others. Accessorize or die.
Cher Horowitz is total golden at Beverly Hills High. She's a full-on Betty. Her closet is strictly designer. She has all the answers... so why shouldn't she run everyone's life? She referees her best friend De's relationship. She's generously making over the new girl, Tai, in her own image. In the land of the clueless, Cher was born to lead.
Only two things have her stumped. Uno) Should she go out with a boy who dresses better than she does? (I mean, what would she bring to the relationship?) And b) What about Josh, the college guy she despises who thinks she's an empty-headed, self-centered, spoiled bimbette? Why does he keep popping into her mind? Could it possibly be that in matters of the heart Cher is really... clueless?
As if!

I added a 4th star because there is a glossary in the back and it defines woman as your boyfriend's name for you. 164 Okay I totally have seen this movie tons of times. It's hilarious and I'm slightly obsessed with it.
So, of course, I needed to read this book to see what was different or the same. I also wanted to see if it was going to be better than the movie.. because books usually are.
The entire time I kept thinking of the movie. I know how cliché that is, trust me I do, HOWEVER it is so freaking hard not to do that when you've seen the movie countless times before. I love Cher even more and her friendship with Dionne was basically everything to me.
Then there's romance, which was to die for. It honestly made me smile while reading this book because of the movie!
Overall, it's a super quick and fun read. clueless had loveable and quirky characters. I just really enjoyed this book and it kind of makes me want to rewatch the movie.. again. 164 Growing up a black openly gay teen in a white heterosexual town Cher Horowitz and her life was my escape. Not only did I see this movie FOUR times in the theater but I read every single book (and own them) starting with this one.
She had gay friends, money, fashion, and it was all so enticing to me. Yes it was watered down for Young Adults (no drug references - Oh you got Coke here? - or overt sexual overtones), but still I was hooked. Even watched the TV show (that did it no justice). In my opinion the books were WAY better than the TV show. I was praying the writer of the books would've written the show. 164 Clueless
PLOT: In Beverly Hills lives a beautiful, Betty, of a girl named Cher that lives in the lap of luxury. But despite the mansion that stretch's acres, her walk-in closet full of designer clothes, owning her own jeep at 16, and totally fashion-forward friend's at BHH like her bestie Dionne, Cher's just like any other girl struggling with grades, boys, and proving to her step-brother she's more than just a pretty face and not totally clueless.
MY THOUGHTS: I didn't know there was a book series for this. I should have known tho. There usually is. I've watched this movie SO MANY times! I couldn't practically see the scenes in my head as I was reading it. It doesn't stray too far from the movie, which if this was written first I'm pleasantly surprised by the fact the movie did such a precise job. The plot basically while exaggerated and poking fun at the other half, shows similarities to things we can all relate too. Such as having to sometimes take care of relatives with health concerns -as Cher watches out for her dad-, being there for a friend and helping them get through a heartache-as Cher did Tai-, getting robbed and feeling violated-as Cher did when she was stuck up after the party-, dealing with the hurt of discovering you love someone and seeing them with someone else-as Cher does Tai and Josh-and then having strong feelings for someone only to find out they aren't who you thought they were-like Christian-. I totally loved Cher. She is kind of clueless, but in a lovable way because she tries so hard to do good and that redeems any shallowness of being a material girl. She and Dionne just fit together. I loved Dionne's wit. I even liked her and Murry together and I thought they picked the perfect people to play the characters for the movie! GREAT CASTING CALL! You can't help but feel a certain warmth for all the characters ..well except for Elliot. Especially Josh who was just too good to be true and I don't know why I didn't see it from the start that he and Cher were perfect together when I first watched the movie. Can I have a Josh please or the fire Dionne and Murry have? Or even Cher's closet?
RATING 10. If you watched the movie you'll breeze through this one because it's basically the same without the visual to back it up. 164 I know this may be a silly novel, but I really liked it. I didn't read any others in the series, but I thought this was a fun read as a teenager. It made me take that era just a little less seriously. 164
