Did not enjoy the book as much! Chance: Escape from the Holocaust: Memories of a Refugee Childhood (English Edition) eBook : Shulevitz, Uri Touching and real. The first person narrative of the story is impactful and moving. I love the illustrations that complement the story. They have a powerful energy to them. This book feels important. Very important. Chance: Escape from the Holocaust: Memories of a Refugee Childhood (English Edition) eBook : Shulevitz, Uri Chance is the perfect name for this book. Shulevitz' memoir so difficult to fathom what he and his family endured. Taking a journey like this as a reader enjoyable sure isn't the right word. Sharing this person's reality, knowing what he has overcome, and how most of us will never really know hunger. Not like that. That the text is peppered with sketches from his memories is all the powerful a reading experience. Chance: Escape from the Holocaust: Memories of a Refugee Childhood (English Edition) eBook : Shulevitz, Uri Uri Shulevits has written and illustrated an amazing educational volume of an autobiography. I read it and have given it to my son and he is reading it now. It is tremendously informative to read a work of non fiction that illustrates exactly what it was like to live in German occupied Poland during WWII. A lot of heart wrenching moments that brought tears to my eyes. The way everyone treated the Jewish people, for the simple crime of being born a certain race, is unthinkable. Too many forget or deny this ever happened or on some scale is still happening What little Uri went through as a little boy, kids these days cannot even fathom. We get caught up in trivial meaningless problems, but we don't realize that only a few decades ago, little boys' only problems were where to get the next crumb of food so as not to starve to death. Or how to not lose one's parents in this horrendous world of war and starvation. Buy this book for your child, whether Jewish or not, to educate them and to give them perspective and appreciation of life! Chance: Escape from the Holocaust: Memories of a Refugee Childhood (English Edition) eBook : Shulevitz, Uri This is our review from a book club with people aged 9 to 70.We recommend this Book for as an interesting and true story of the literally the lengths to which a Jewish family went to remain safe during and after World War II. It is also the story of a Jewish family's flight from Warsaw and survival in the USSR and Soviet republic of Turkestan during the war.It was the first book that our young book club reader read from a child's point of view and she appreciated that. Another reader in our group appreciated that it was a memoir based on a true account. The author combined his memories with those of his father to write this book. It was very vivid and graphic he was very honest and talked about his chronic hunger, persecution, and deaths of people. One of the strongest parts was in the middle and the ways that he and his mother survived even when his father left. For the young reader, the images were a little hard to understand at first, but they got easier.
