Bruno Taut: Meister des farbigen Bauens in Berlin By Deutscher Werkbund

Bruno

I simply loved the book. It`s very detailed when it comes to information, and it has a lot of photos from when the building was built and nowadays, making it possible to compare. The colorful images are also a strong point about this book. It`s one of the most complete compilation books about Bruno Taut I have read. One thing it isn`t very nice though is that the English part is not as complete as the German part. I would strongly recommend that the reader also know German in order to read the whole book without missing any detail, although is not necessary to understand his works and context in a general way. Bruno Taut: Meister des farbigen Bauens in Berlin Open an attractive, new publication of this type, and you expect a good, informative read. That's ok in the German text, I presume, but you won't find it in the English translation. The translator needs to be bi lingual in the field of architectural history or town planning at least, and these people do exist! Not here though. Professionals, students and genuinely interested readers will struggle with the blatantly inexpert English, even if the text were plainer than in pale blue.Whatever the level of reader reading the English will be a challenge.Errors are on all three levels : Clumsy dictionary translating by a non expert. With to start a paragraph (used in the German original) is irritating in English. Thirdly, just too many otherwise tolerable pit falls such as German word order. Expert translation is needed in the next edition.I was delighted to be getting this book, the photos are good, and it's compact. But I was assuming I could read it in architectural language, which isn't the case. I get the gist, and the illustrations help, but I'm disappointed with it.
