Athenian Hoplite vs Spartan Hoplite: Peloponnesian War 431\u2013404 BC (Combat, Band 53)

I was disappointed with this book rather than an analysis of hoplite combat, or even a discussion of their arms and armour (was it different between Athens and Sparta, etc.) this is in the main a brief precis of Thucydides' history of the Peloponnesian War (or the Athenian War as it was known in antiquity). Even with that caveat the text presented gives stated fact for what are modern interpretations and (highly educated I admit) guesses. Surely this is a title to explore and discuss hoplite warfare not just parrot other, easily available, texts? The illustrations seem to have been chosen for what could be found and used for free rather than what would ideally complement the text and whilst I loved Hook's colour artwork, why is no one wearing any footwear!Osprey have produced a number of excellent titles on Hoplites and I would recommend them (especially the 'Warrior' title) over this which adds absolutely nothing to what most readers with an interest will already have. Dr Murray Dahm Very good information easy to read Dr Murray Dahm Excellent addition to the series Dr Murray Dahm In the Peloponnesian War of 431 404 B.C., Athens and Sparta and their respective allies fought for dominance of Greece. The outcome of the war would help determine the eventual fate of the Greek states. Author Murray Dahm here offers coverage of both the strategic and the tactical aspects of a long war fought over 2000 years ago.The author makes the most of the surviving sources to present the strategies of the two sides while also focusing down on three separate combats as examples of the fighting. The text is accompanied by lots of period and modern artwork, photographs of artifacts and locations, and battle maps. This reviewer would have liked tactical detail; perhaps too much was attempted for a single short Osprey Combat series volume. Recommended to students and the general reader. Dr Murray Dahm Great Osprey book as always. Dr Murray Dahm
