review All Creatures Great and Small

La vie quotidienne d'un vétérinaire au début du 20e siècle avec ses difficultés diagnostiques, les relations parfois difficiles avec les clients et souvent chaleureuses, le caractère positif et attachant du héros. Un grand plaisir de lecture ! All Creatures Great and Small I now completely understand why this book is so beloved. James Herriot somehow managed to hit all the right notes in his collection of vignettes. There is the humorous, the bittersweet, the heart breaking, the nostalgic, the witty, and the fascinating amongst this loosely woven collection of stories. He paints his pictures of the Yorkshire Dales beautifully. He gives his human as well as his animal characters the utmost grace and compassion. Yet, he never once falls into the trap of sappiness. One of the great things about this book is that most of the stories take up just one chapter. So, if you are very busy or plan to be interrupted a great deal, you can pick it up and put it down again easily. I don't know that I've enjoyed a book quite this much in a long time, so I would highly recommend it, most especially to animal lovers and country folks. All Creatures Great and Small When this book was published in the States in 1972, it caused a sensation. Critics and publishers alike called it “a miracle” and, for once, they were right. Its success prompted its author to write two sequels and several other books, and in time everything All Creatures Great and Small Very good book All Creatures Great and Small The book portrayed the life of a country veterinarian and the farmers her visited. Once you started reading, it was as if you were part of the book. You could almost feel the pain of the animals, the tiredness of the farmers and especially the vet. The animals always came first, regardless of time. The book had lots of humour. It was a great read. All Creatures Great and Small

I discovered Herriot's book a few year ago and loved them at first reading. He doen't try to give you a lesson, or to play the wise guy, or to make a stand he just tells about the ups and downs of a young veterinary surgeon at the begining of the century (the 20th All Creatures Great and Small James Herriot était vétérinaire dans le Yorkshire au siècle dernier et nous relate ses aventures dans ce métier, depuis son premier poste d'assistant, dans les années 30 J'ai aimé tout ce que j'ai lu. All Creatures Great and Small Although the proud owner of the paper version (and the whole series as well) I had to purchase the Kindle edition to be able to read some parts anytime anywhere. It is the very first book in the series, I think it's best to start with this one to understand the setting and All Creatures Great and Small Great book ! Herriot writes for the casual refer as well as for the vet, with witty stories and laugh out loud anecdotes.A delightful read ! All Creatures Great and Small
