We shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight in the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills, we shall never surrender. - Winston Churchill Clayton Roberts Well-written. Enjoyable read. Even careful historians often seem to struggle to remain detached when writing about history that is still current events and that is true here, making the discussion of the mid-1980's longer and more partisan than it should be. If written today likely that section would be greatly condensed and more objective (while no doubt the section on the history of the past few years would be given undue importance). A minor quibble, of course.
I read the 1985 edition co-authored by Clayton and David Roberts. But now that Goodreads doesn't permit members to add books they don't have in their database, I have to use this one to keep my record--it being the closest to the book I actually read. Clayton Roberts Vol. #2 One of about 8 books I had to read for a college course about 30 years on the History of England. Interesting read along with the other books in the course which expanded and balanced out the history of this great people and nation. One other thing... I like it so much I keep it on my bookshelf and refer to it! Clayton Roberts
