By Ahmad Bashir

sketches depicted by Ahmed Bashir in a classic manner , amazing.

'The Rascal' as Mumtaz Mufti portrayed him, Ahmad Bashir refused to accept everything around him said Shehr Bano Khan for this progressive writer, journalist and film maker.
He wrote pen Sketches of people like Mumtaz Mufti, Krishan Chandar, Meera Ji, Zaheer Kashmiri, Maulana Chiragh Hasan Hasrat and Maulana Hasrat Mohani. The book Provoked the then religious Scholars of pakistan and a fatwa was issued against him when Younas Javed Published a collection of his sketches entitled 'Jo Miley Thay Rastay Main'.It is a wonderful book and brings forth the inner Personality of Ahmad Bashir as true Gentleman who roam the roads of Karachi until the sun rose and Insha's fit subsided. The next day in the office, an embarrassed Insha would apologise to Bashir for troubling him the night before. Come on, Bashir would wink at him, it happens to all great men. And I am just like you so please don't mention it to anyone.Wrote Mufti about him. 296 Screeching!! just as the cawing of the Urdu journalist crows of a bygone era. I wish he had poured his life's frustration in composing ghazals (Maybe he did but I haven't read any yet). Surely he would have given Jaun a run for his money. The thing is that Urdu books serve as a nice desert after dinner and the bitter realism of Manto and Ahmed Bashir, the latter in his pen sketches, wel..they are the dark chocolates of Urdu literature. Which is not to say that there weren't bits which I didn't enjoy thoroughly (hey wait, I just used a triple negative and if you are wondering what i meant, I am with you) But definitely one of the highlights of the book is his sketch of his journalistic mentor Maulana Chiragh Hasan Hasrat. Hasrat was his hard ball boss during the day and when night fell Ahmed Bashir became his chaperone in their soirees in wine and music. I subsequently read about their relationship in a short account by Intezaar Hussain in his memoirs Chiraghon ka Dhuan. An interesting passage in his sketch of Hasrat is when Maulana Husrat Mohani comes to visit Chiragh Hasrat ( Maulana Hasrat x 2) and the author conducts his interview. If there weren't references to wine and women, and the now seemingly extinct liberal poet maulanas that sought the company of both , this classic sketch would have made it to the course books of the Islamic Republic.
296 It was just okay... character sketches ka majmuaa hai. Chand charater sketches interesting bhi the (interview, qalandar, gipsy, soorma, peer-o-murshid) but overall the book is average...
