The Brew 9/15

Posted on 16 September 2016 by Admin - Mike Cortez

This week in, The Brew! We are back and while it has been awhile this week we are keeping it short. It is Oktoberfest time and that means that festivals are going to be kicking off left and right and Oktoberfest beers will start to hit the market. We have a big project we are working on leading to the Great American Beer Festival next month so stay tuned for that. This week, we talk about a expansions grand opening this weekend in Austin and we talk about a sweet beer release coming out of San Antonio. Check it out new in this weeks edition of, The Brew!

Austin – This weekend Colorado officially comes to Texas, not the whole state but rather Oskar Blues Brewery. They have opened up their expansion brewery in north Austin which has become a 5 mile epicenter of breweries in the area. This weekend, Oskar Blues is having their official “Can’d Opening Party” this Saturday from noon – 10pm. They will have live music from 5 bands performing throughout the day, vendors selling goods and food trucks selling grub. It is going to be a great weekend to celebrate the arrival of Oskar Blues and they have a great space to host the large celebration. Tickets are only $15 which will get you a commemorative glass and two pours. The bar will feature Dale’s Pale Ale, Pinner Throwback IPA, OB IPA, Mama’s Little Yella Pilsner and their first TX Specialty (made with local Blacklands Malt) Texas REEB Rye IPA. Don’t miss out on this fun afternoon. Click here for tickets and more information.

branchline-pineappel

San Antonio – Who says just because summer is coming to a close we can’t still enjoy lighter beers? Not the guys at Branchline Brewing Co., because this weekend they are releasing their new special seasonal, Pineapple Woodcutter Rye IPA. They took their original Woodcutter Rye IPA and loaded it with hundreds of pounds of fresh pineapple to give drinkers a fruity hoppy ale. One can only imagine the complexity of this tropical rye IPA. The event goes down this Sunday from 2-9pm and don’t forget, Branchline sells Crowlers of their beers and even sells 6pks to go. This if a free event, just buy what you drink and tip your bartenders. Food will also be available for sell. Click here for more information.

As always, if you’re looking to get out this weekend we suggest you visit a local brewery. We have a list of all of the breweries near you so head over to the Breweries and Brewpubs page and go support your local brewers. Don’t forget to pick up a copy of our book “Beer Lover’s Texas: Best Breweries, Brewpubs & Beer Bars”. Click here and pick up a copy today!

The Brew! 8/11

Posted on 12 August 2016 by Admin - Mike Cortez

This week in, The Brew! We had to take some important time off to focus on work but drinking beer along the way. So many things have gone by but we are gearing up for a lot of big things including some special projects leading up to, as well as at the Great American Beer Festival. Summer is coming to a close soon so we will be look forward to Oktoberfest and festival season coming up.  This week, we talk about a big 3yr celebration for a San Antonio brewery, we talk about a big shock from a popular north Texas brewery, we talk about your last chance to become an investor in a local breweries expansion and lastly, we talk about a great event that is very special to us. Check it out now in this weeks edition of, The Brew!

busted sandal

San Antonio – Nothing screams a laidback Texan like one rocking sandals, even if they are busted. What started a drunken joke between founder Michael DiCicco and brewer Rob Garza when they stumbled upon a busted sandal in an Austin parking lot, evolved over the years to become the great brewery they are today. This Saturday from 3-8pm, Busted Sandal Brewing Company will celebrate 3yrs and they are having a big party to mark the occasion. Tickets are going for $50 but you will get a glass along with seven pours, a can of beer and food. They will have Sonic Radio rocking out 80’s and 90’s covers and because we are in Texas and it’s dreadfully hot, they will have a cooling area to get a little relief. Tickets are still on sale but they are capping the event to 200 tickets so get them now before they sell out. Congratulations to the great team over at Busted Sandal and wish them many more years of success! Click here for tickets and more information.

revolver

Granbury – As Texas craft beer continues to grow, the scene becomes more competitive. Unfortunately over the last 2yrs, we have seen smaller breweries come and quickly go but today we received news that Revolver Brewing has been purchased by Tenth and Blake Beer Company which is the “Craft Beer Division” of MillerCoors. Revolver will be joining their portfolio with the likes of Blue Moon, Terrapin Beer Company, Batch 19 and others.
Revolver Brewing was founded in 2012 by father and son Ron and Rhett Keisler in the small town of Granbury. They broke into the market with their Blood & Honey, a 7% ABV American Wheat Ale that was a quick favorite for many that for a while, they had a hard time keeping up with the demand. Now ther is no telling what the future holds for revolver but according to a press release from Tenth and Blake Beer Company, “Revolver’s management and employees will continue to create, brew, package, market and sell Revolver’s portfolio of brands”.
With the huge influx of craft breweries across the country, big beer conglomerates like MillerCoors and AB InBev (Anheuser-Busch) have seen their profits sink. They have starting looking at purchasing smaller craft breweries in an attempt to recover their loss but will craft beer fans follow? In the past we have seen many who would go on the hunt for the elusive Bourbon County Stout from Goose Island Beer Co but once it was purchased by AB InBev, one-time loyal fans turned their back. So it goes to ask, if your favorite local brewery was sold to AB InBev or MillerCoors, would you stop supporting them?

Hops & Grain

San Marcos – Two months ago, Austin based Hops & Grain put out a notice that they had reached maxed capacity at their current facility and were looking to build out a second location in San Marcos. They setup a page on WeFunder to assist them with raising the necessary capital for the new location and almost as soon as the buzz started they broke well over their $100K goal. Now in its final 24hrs, they have raised almost $844K from over 300 investors. So far, there has been no word yet on when we can expect to see the new brewery. Hops and Grain, founded by Josh Hare in 2011, launched the brewery with Alt Eration and Pale Dog but over the years they have expanded their line up and have won prestigious awards for their beers. The new brewery and tap room will be located in San Marcos near the Texas State University which will be a great stop when heading down to float the river. The WeFunder page is still active and they are still taking investors but the page closes tomorrow at 10pm CST. Don’t miss your chance to be part of a local breweries expansion. Click here for more info.
(*Disclaimer, this is not a sponsored pitch but we are participants as an investor*)

MD Anderson

Houston – While this does not involve beer, this is something that is very near and dear to my heart. When I had the official launch party for Texas Beer Guide on Sept 8, 2012, I was in bad shape and just a couple days later I was diagnosed with kidney cancer. Luckily, I beat cancer a month later but it wasn’t an easy task. This past Monday my doctors gave me an all clear for being 4yrs cancer free. There are so many great organizations that raise funds for cancer research such as Pints for Prostates and 1400 Miles, but I will be participating in the MD Anderson Boot Walk to End Cancer on November 12th in Houston. I would like to all to consider joining be on the walk by signing up with team Bite Me Cancer or consider making a donation to one day help make cancer history. Click here for more information.

Oskar Blues

Austin – Colorado based Oskar Blues are getting that much closer to finally opening their Austin brewery to the public. Last week, the brewing team started their first batch at the new facility and soon fresh Oskar Blues beers will be flowing across the state. The first beer that was brewed at the new location was Dales Pale Ale and the rest of the lineup will be brewed soon. This month, Oskar Blues released their newest beer Priscilla which is a 5.2% ABV American Wit. It is a very smooth a citrus forward take on a Belgian Wit with banana and clove on the nose. Priscilla will be just what you need to get you through the brutal Texas summer heat. Much like their headquarters in Colorado, Oskar Blues will work to bring live music to the brewery to interact with Austin’s rich music scene. No word yet on an official grand opening yet but you know that we will pass it along as soon as we hear.

untapped

Fort Worth – It is that time again, Untapped Festival is invading Ft. Worth once again for an amazing day of craft beer and live music. This year they will host over 80 breweries bringing over 300 different beers to try. Austin Beerworks

The Brew 4/28

Posted on 29 April 2016 by Admin - Mike Cortez

This week in, The Brew! We have been away taking a little break to deal with work life and a much needed short vacation. Don’t worry we are back but we did miss a few very important things. Happy belated 10th Anniversary to our good friends at Uncle Billy’s Smokehouse & Brewery, we missed Burning Can but heard amazing things and we are really looking forward to the Oskar Blues Brewery opening in Austin around June and lastly, a huge congratulations to our friends over Real Ale Brewing for marking 20 great years. Now let’s catch up on what’s going on this week throughout the state. This week, we talk about a big anniversary for an Austin brewery with big new to celebrate, we talk about another Texas brewery that is closing their doors, we give you the details on one of the state’s latest breweries grand opening tomorrow near Houston, we talk about a Houston brewery that is giving back to the community after this month’s damaging storms and lastly, we head north to see what Dallas area brewery is celebrating their 1st anniversary. Check it out now in this week’s edition of, The Brew!

Austin Beerworks

Austin – Anniversaries are celebrations to mark another year, some do it quietly while others go all out. This weekend, Austin Beerworks sets the stage to celebrate their 5th Anniversary and this year they are planning to go big. Aside from having 5 delicious food trucks selling food, live music throughout the day and a massive list of their beers including their core beers, easonal’s, Heavy Machinery IPA’s, small batches, casks, barrel aged beers and the release of their 5th anniversary beer, Gringo de Mayo Mexican Lager, Austin Beerworks is celebrating their news of expanding the brewery. They are in the process of expanding their 8,000 Sqft brewery to include an adjacent 16,000 Sqft warehouse which would greatly increase their size and brewing capacity. The expansion is expected to be completed by Spring of 2017 so we can only imagine the size of their 6th anniversary celebration next year and fingers crossed for another release of the 99-pks. We would like to wish the guys at Austin Beerworks a happy 5th anniversary and continued success as they expand over the next year. Their anniversary party kicks off this Saturday from 1-6pm.  Click here for tickets and more information.

Texas Big Beer

Buna – Today news broke from Texas Big Beer Brewery that they are closing down. Back in November of 2015, the brewery started a GoFundMe campaign to help them raise funds to pay for their brewery licensing state fees and they raised $4,870 of the $8K they were hoping for. They were able to pay for their licensing and continue running the brewery but it looks like the brewery has brewed its last batch. They are inviting everyone out this Saturday for one last hurrah starting at 5pm.  It is always sad to see a business shutter and we know that John, Tammy and their daughter Carol were very passionate about what they did. They are some of the nicest people I’ve had the pleasure of meeting and were always so enthusiastic to introduce people to their beers at festivals and events. The statement listed above is from Texas Big Beer Brewery’s Facebook page. We wish John and Tammy a happy retirement enjoying their family and Carol all the best in her future endeavors.

saloon door

Webster – This week, Saloon Door Brewing spent the last week inviting patrons out for the soft opening of their brewery but tomorrow, they kick off their official grand opening. Founded by Galveston natives, Josh Anderson, Jason Graham, Jeff Graham and Austin Webber are the men behind the latest brewpub in the state. Tomorrow they will be raffling off swag, games on the patio and a DJ setting the mood as they celebrate the opening starting at 2pm for those of you lucky enough to get off early on a Friday or it will also be a great way to wait out the Houston rush out traffic. We would like to wish the guys behind Saloon Door Brewing the best of luck and we look forward to checking out the brewery soon. Click here for more information.

Brash

Houston – Many Houston residents were affected by the torrential floods the other week including many people we know personally and our hearts go out to those who lost their lives or homes. The guys at Brash Brewing Company have been given permission from the powers that be (Stone Brewing) to sell crowlers of Adopted Bastard. If you weren’t aware, Stone Brewing announced that they would be discontinuing Arrogant Bastard but they allowed Brash Brewing to adopt the recipe and brew it for on premise consumption but in light of recent events, Brash will be selling crowlers for $15 and proceeds will be donated to help those affected by the recent floods starting today. There is no limit so you better get there quick before they run out!

TAP

Dallas – It’s hard to believe a year has flown by already but the team behind Texas Ale Project are gearing up to celebrate their 1st anniversary this Saturday. They will have live music from The Driftin’ Outlaw Band beginning at 2:30pm and Brian Lambert following.  Pit Commander will be out selling delicious BBQ all day and Texas Ale Project will have 10 beers on tap which are listed below.

The Brew 3/31

Posted on 01 April 2016 by Admin - Mike Cortez

This week in, The Brew! Festival season is quickly upon us from bluebonnets to beer fests, spring is in the air. This week, we give you a list of great beers to try this spring, talk about a big beer festival in Dallas, a week of beer events in San Antonio and about a very special event taking place in New Braunfels to help a local brewing family. Check it out now in this weeks edition of, The Brew!

Texas – So, you’ve succeeded in rationing out those stouts and winter warmers you were hoarding since fall. Now it’s on to lighter weather, and lighter brews. With rising temps making it harder to crave rich, heavy-bodied beers, we have a selection of less-filling options that still deliver on the flavor front. These are the Texas beers that will carry you through the spring. Click here for the full article I wrote on the Thrillist.

big texas beer fest

Dallas – This weekend, the annual Big Texas Beer Festival is returning to the Fair Park for one of the biggest two day beer festivals in the state. With over 500 beers from 140 breweries, the Big Texas Beer Festival has become one of the most popular and celebrated festivals. Over the years, the festival has helped raise almost $40K for North Texas Food Bank while also helping to spread awareness about craft beer. This year they will have over 50 local breweries represented and it is a great chance to check out what is brewing near you. Tickets are still available but you better hurry since it kicks off Friday night. If you can’t make it up north this weekend, they will host the Big Texas Beer Fest Houston on May 21st. Click here for tickets and more information.

SABW

San Antonio – This Saturday, San Antonians will be spend the next eight days celebrating craft beer at events throughout the city.  The 6th Annual San Antonio Beer Week starts Saturday at 4:30pm at Main Plaza in front of the San Fernando Cathedral, followed by closing ceremonies on Sunday April 10th at the historic Lonestar Brewery. There are a bunch of great events going on from a small beer festival and a beer brunch to Doughnut Beer Pairings and Pub Crawls. Be sure to hit up a few of the events. Be sure to check out the 6th Annual Sweet and Sour Soiree which pairs sour beers and sweet cupcakes. It has been a very popular event every year so you better get tickets before they are all gone. Click here for all of the SABW information.

New Braunfels

New Braunfels – One of the best things about living in this great state is that when someone is in need, Texans stand up to lend a hand. Last week, Kelly and Lindsey Meyer the owners of New Braunfels Brewing Company lost their home to a fire. Luckily everyone got out safe but as anyone can imagine, losing a house is devastating. The great people at Guadalupe Brewing Company have stepped out to help their local brewers and they will be hosting a fundraiser on Friday from 4-9pm. All beer sales proceeds will go directly to the Meyer family as well as funds raised from the silent auction and donation jar. Our thoughts are with the Meyer family through this difficult time and hats off to Guadalupe Brewing Company for organizing this great event. Click here for more information.

As always, if you’re looking to get out this weekend we suggest you visit a local brewery, don’t forget that we have a list of all of the breweries near you so head over to the Breweries and Brewpubs page and go support your local brewers.

Also, Circle will be unveiling their new Archetype Historical IPTheA which is “Adhering to historical accuracy throughout its creation, this unique beer is the result of brewery owners’ passion for the historical roots of beer and the brewery’s mission of respecting the purity of where beer started”. Do yourself a favor and take the Metro Rail and avoid traffic. Congrats to Circle Brewing team and keep making great beer. Click here for tickets and more information.

red horn

Cedar Park – If you really want to get out of Austin to avoid the SXSW madness, you might want to consider heading 45mins north to celebrate with Red Horn Coffee and Brewing Company as they mark their 1st anniversary. The Brew 3/3

Posted on 04 March 2016 by Admin - Mike Cortez

This week, in The Brew! Wow we can’t believe March is already here. I feel like winter flew by in the blink of a blurry eye. We are ready to kick off spring and there is a lot more blooming besides flowers. This week, we give you the heads up about a small beer festival taking place in New Braunfels, we let you know what new Houston area brewery is opening this week, we say congratulations to an Austin brewery celebrating 1yr, we see what’s cooking at a San Antonio brewery this weekend and lastly, we congratulate a Dallas brewpub celebrating 1yr. Check it out now in this weeks edition of, The Brew!

wurstfest

New Braunfels – Every year for the first two weeks in November, a small German village opens up in New Braunfels for Wurstfest. Last year, they decided to open in the spring for a one day craft beer festival and this year they are back again. The Wurstfest Craft Beer Festival takes place this Saturday with over 80 beers on hand to sample along with live music and food trucks. While this is one of the smaller festivals in the state, it is great for those who don’t like long lines and just want to enjoy some great beer. A majority of the participating breweries are from central Texas and beyond so this is a great chance to check the latest beers from your local breweries. The event kicks off at noon on Saturday and tickets are $35 if purchased in advanced otherwise it is going to cost you $50 at the door, so if you plan on attending, make sure you buy your tickets soon. Click here for tickets and more information.

back pew

Porter – This Saturday, our great friends with Back Pew Brewing are ready to welcome guests to check out the Houston areas newest brewery. Founded by owner and head brewer Bobby Harl, Back Pew is ready to unleash their beers upon the Houston area. Located just of north Houston in the building of an old church, Back Pew is brewing beers for both sinners and saints. Bobby designed his beers to fit into two categories, the Saints line are beers that are lighter and sessionable great for those who are either new to craft beer or just want something for a day of drinking but they still pack a great flavor. The Sinners lineup is bigger, bolder and higher in alcohol content for those who want something more out of a beer. A personal recommendation would be their 9th Circle Black IPA that comes in at 8.5% ABV and a nice 90 IBU’s, it is dark, roasted and bitter just like the sinner that you are. For those that want something a little saintly, their Blue Testament is a great American style pilsner that combines traditional German flavors with a noticeably sweet touch thanks to Texas blue corn. Be sure to check these guys out as they open their brewery to the public this Saturday starting at noon. Kids and pets are welcome if they are well behaved and they will have Tin Roof BBQ on hand selling food. Congratulations to Back Pew and wish them all the best as they continue to grow. Click her for more information.

Last stand

Austin – It seems like just yesterday Last Stand Brewing opened their doors but this Saturday they are celebrating their 1st anniversary and the plan to celebrate big. They will be debuting their new taproom and a lineup of beers but they will be tapping a barrel aged beer every hour. They full list hasn’t been released but attendees can expect to see their 1 year old Barrel Aged Imperial Stout which has been reserved from their opening day last year, a Barrel Aged IPA, a Barrel Agred 2xIPA, their Barrel Aged Russian Imperial Oatmeal Stout and more. Live music will keep the crowd entertained and food trucks will be on hand selling food to keep the stomach coated. Congratulations to the great folks at Last Stand and wishing them continued success. Be sure to stop by this weekend from noon to 7pm. Click here for more information.

alamo

San Antonio – This Saturday, Alamo Beer Company is hosting a Food Truck Showdown. Six local food trucks will go head to head in an all-out flavor competition. Attendees will receive a pint from Alamo and samples from the food trucks competing for the people’s choice vote to be claimed San Antonio’s #1 Food Truck (Best of luck to our friends with Rickshaw Stop). The taproom will be open throughout the day so Alamo beers will be flowing and live music will set the mood. The Food Truck Showdown runs from noon to 3pm and tickets are only $15. After the festival, the brewery taproom will remain open until midnight so you can make it an all day event. Click here for tickets and more information.

braindead

Dallas – This week BrainDead Brewing is setting the stage to celebrate their 1st Anniversary but they won’t rob you of a Saturday, instead you can spend Sunday funday in Deep Ellum enjoying their great beers and some specialties from breweries they see fit. They celebration kicks off at 10am on Sunday with a breakfast buffet. They will have their Bent de Garde and Hammer of the Gods pouring all day long but every hour they will be something special.

The Brew 2/18

Posted on 19 February 2016 by Admin - Mike Cortez

This week in, The Brew! We took a month off to look over 2016 and everything that is to come. We have big plans to revamp Texas Beer Guide and spending some much needed time updating and adding breweries. Thank you to everyone that has stuck by us and even supported the release of the book “Beer Lover’s Texas”. Thank you to everyone that came out last month to the book signing in Houston at Brazos Bookstore and big thanks to our friends from Back Pew Brewing, Town in City Brewing and SpindleTap Brewery for being part of the event. We look forward to continue bringing you all the news and events in the Texas craft beer community. This week, we talk about a central Texas brewery that is finally opening their taproom, we talk about an upcoming event that is expected to sell out soon and lastly we give you the rundown of a series of festivals taking over Texas. Check it out now in this week’s edition of, The Brew!

whitestone

Cedar Park – This weekend kicks off the grand opening of Whitestone Brewery. Whitestone was founded by former software engineer and home brewer Ryan Anglen who brought on Kris Gray formerly from Stone Brewing as his head brewer. Together they are helping to put Cedar Park on the map for as a craft beer destination. This weekend they will be unveiling the new tap room and welcoming attendees in with offerings of their six year round releases. This weekend they will have live music, food trucks, raffle prizes and of course beer. The brewery is family and dog friendly but make sure both your children are on leashes and your dogs are well behaved. Lastly, Whitestone has a crowler machine so be sure to pick up some beers to go. We wish the guys at Whitestone all the best and look forward to checking out the brewery soon. Click here for more information.

The Brew! 1/21

Posted on 22 January 2016 by Admin - Mike Cortez

This week in, The Brew! 2016 is off to a great start and there are so many new breweries and brewpubs on the horizon. Before we start talking about all that is to come, we have a lot to talk about coming up this weekend. This week, we talk about the big book signing taking place this weekend in Houston, we say cheers to a great brewery from Dallas that is celebrating 3yrs, we reiterate an event we talked about last week going down in San Antonio and lastly, we see what hidden brewing gem in the Hill Country is celebrating 5yrs. Check it out now in this week’s edition of, The Brew!

book signing 2

Houston – This weekend is a very exciting for me because I will be returning to my hometown to celebrate the release of my book Beer Lover’s Texas. We will be hosting a signing at Brazos Bookstore on Saturday at 7pm and we will have our friends from Back Pew Brewing, Town in City Brewing and SpindleTap Brewery will be joining us at the event and pouring samples of their great beers. Please come out and pick up a signed copy of the book and show your support for Texas craft beer. Click here for more info.

Community

Dallas – If you’re in north Texas, you will not want to miss the big blow out going on at Community Beer Company on Saturday as they celebrate 3yrs. They will have over 30 beers on tap, live music, vendors and food trucks for what is expected to be a fun afternoon. The party kicks off at noon and runs until 6:30 but you must buy your tickets ahead of time because they will not be selling tickets at the door. While they will have a bunch of beers on tap, it is only fitting that you try their 3rd Anniversary beer, which is a Triple IPA that they have dubbed Triple Yessir! We would like to congratulate our friends with Community and wish them continued years of success. Click here for tickets and more info.

les

San Antonio – Last week we posted the event for Southerleigh Fine Food & Brewery’s head brewer, Wes Locke. We were wrong on the date and the event is taking place this weekend. This Sunday, the San Antonio craft beer community is coming together to rally for Les Locke, the head brewer at Southerleigh Fine Food & Brewery. Towards the fall of 2015 he fell into some serious health issues but he is on the road to recovery and we are glad to see him get back to his passion. Les is teaming up with Freetail Brewing at their S. Presa location to host an event to celebrate his health and they are brining other breweries along for this event. All proceeds raised through sales or donations will go directly to the Make A Wish Foundation who will be on site at the event. It takes place Sunday at 2pm. Click here for more info.

Barber Shop

Dripping Springs – Driving through the town of Dripping Springs it can be easy to miss The Barber Shop. If you are not familiar with it, it is not a place to get a new doo but instead a cold brew. This small brewpub is celebrating 5yrs this Saturday and is reason enough to head into the Hill Country for an afternoon of “live music, great food, and lots of special beer”. You will likely find some special brews from neighboring breweries but be sure to get a taste of the beers that owner and brewer John McIntosh is brewing up. Cheers to 5yrs and may newcomers stumble in looking for a haircut for years to come. Click here for more info.

As always, if you’re looking to get out this weekend we suggest you visit a local brewery, don’t forget that we have a list of all of the breweries near you so head over to the Breweries and Brewpubs page and go support your local brewers.

The Brew 1/15

Posted on 15 January 2016 by Admin - Mike Cortez

This week in, The Brew! What happened to 2015? That year flew by quick and here we are in 2016. We are ready to get back to business and we are starting the year off with lots of new. This week, we tell you how you will be crawling in Austin, chowing down and drinking up on the coast, rallying for a friend in San Antonio, breaking big news from Austin and give you the heads up about the next book signing. Check it out now in this week’s edition of, The Brew!

Austin – The Saint Arnold Brewing Company is rolling into town with another one of their marathon pub crawls. Don’t worry, this isn’t a real marathon but you will need to prepare yourself for a long afternoon of bar hopping along Rainey St as they hit 5 bars along the event, ending with an after party at Craft Pride. The event is free with the exception of paying for your own beers and kicks off Saturday afternoon at noon. These are always fun events and you can usually expect a big turnout. Be sure to have fun but most importantly, drink responsibly. Click here for more info.

yagas

Galveston – This weekend is the annual Yaga’s Chili Quest & Beer Fest taking place in the Historic Strand District. Along with some award winning chili, the event will feature beer from Texas and beyond. There is nothing really better than hot chili with a cold beer when it is winter in Texas. Tickets start as low as $34 and you will have the opportunity to sample from over 150+ beers. This year’s event benefits the Ronald McDonald House Galveston, so head on out and have fun while supporting a great cause. Click here for tickets and more info.

San Antonio – This Sunday, the San Antonio craft beer community is coming together to rally for Les Locke, the head brewer at Southerleigh Fine Food & Brewery. Kamala

Austin – Last year we were all shocked when Dipak Topiwala broke the news that he was parting ways with his family’s establishment, Whip In where he formed Kamala Brewing. It left many wondering what was to come of Whip In and what would happen to Kamala Brewing. This week we go news via Facebook when Dipak announced that he is partnering with Jim Sampson of Twisted X Brewing to establish Kamala Gardens Brewery. They plan to “specialize in complex, small batch beers plus a large scale production facility specializing in approachable, daily beers”. No news yet on what is happening at Twisted X but we will continue to follow for any news. We would like to wish Dipak and Jim all the best of luck in this new endevour and we can’t wait to try their beers. They have not disclosed the location of the new brewery but are currently in the stages of funding. It is likely that we won’t see the brewery until the end of 2016 if not early next year but will keep you informed on any updates.

Houston – I am really excited to announce that next Saturday, Jan 23rd I will be heading to my hometown of Houston to host a book signing for Beer Lover’s Texas at Brazos Bookstore. This is a very special moment for me and I am excited to share the book with my fellow Houston beer lovers. We are bringing along our friends with the new Back Pew Brewing who will be serving samples of their great beer and giving attendees the opportunity to see what they are brewing out in Porter. The event takes place Saturday Jan 23rd at Brazos Bookstore at 7pm. I hope to see you out there. Click here for more info.
